The Role

The role of the CAA’s Airspace & ATM Policy team is to develop requirements and policies to support the ever‑evolving technological landscape in air traffic management and to provide expert advice and guidance on airspace and air traffic services operations to our stakeholders.

As an Airspace & ATM Policy Specialist, you will play an important role in delivering a diverse portfolio of work and can expect to be at the forefront of delivering significant national change. This includes the delivery of the UK’s Airspace Modernisation Strategy; working alongside colleagues in the CAA, DfT and industry to improve the regulatory framework for air traffic services;

and working with our international partners on the development of global standards for air traffic management.

About You Essential – The post holder will:
  • Be either a licensed air traffic controller or ex‑military air traffic controller.
  • Be open‑minded with a strong analytical approach and ability to interpret complex, technical information to inform the development of novel solutions.
  • Be able to communicate difficult technical and/or operational concepts fluently, clearly and concisely and write technical papers in a logical and structured manner.
  • Have strong networking and communication skills that will enable you to engage with and influence partners at all levels nationally and internationally.
  • Possess high levels of commitment, reliability and flexibility with a proven ability to collaborate within a deeply technical multi‑disciplinary environment.
  • Be able to work proactively, taking responsibility for their work, with experience of leading small teams of technical experts to achieve specific objectives.
Desirable – The post holder should have:
  • A deep understanding of the regulatory framework for ATM in the UK.
  • A working knowledge of national and international organisations which relate to ATM (e.g. ICAO) and how these might affect the UK.
  • Knowledge and experience of safety management systems and human factors in an ATM context, and may hold a Level 6 (in England, Wales and Northern Ireland) or Level 9 (in Scotland) qualification in a related field.
Additional Information

BPSS - To be vetted you must have the right to work in the UK so that meaningful checks can be undertaken.

If you do not meet these requirements, we may not be able to accept your application.

The CAA values high ethical standards and personal integrity among employees. If invited for interview you will be asked to complete a declaration of interest.

Relocation & Property

The CAA will be relocating from Aviation House (Our Gatwick Office) to new premises in a few years’ time. Our move is driven by strategic, operational and environmental considerations.

We will be moving to a new local home, up to a 15‑mile radius of Aviation House, to minimise disruption for our valued colleagues and customers.

We are now working with colleagues and visitors to understand what we need in our new office, before we start our property search. We will sell Aviation House and land, vacate the site and move to new premises, but we do not expect to move before 2028
