Overview
VAT Assistant Manager – Carpenter Box, part of the Sumer Group. We are a chartered accounting firm located in Crawley, offering a culture built on collaboration, innovation and professional excellence.
RoleIn this role you will take ownership of a diverse client portfolio, preparing and reviewing complex VAT returns and annual adjustments. Your key responsibilities include:
- Prepare and review complex VAT returns, including partial exemption and business/non‑business apportionments.
- Support clients with voluntary disclosures and represent them during VAT visits and inspections.
- Advise on VAT liability queries such as place of supply, contract reviews and property‑related matters (new builds, capital goods scheme, option to tax, property transactions).
- Design effective VAT recovery methods, advise on structuring and inter‑company arrangements, and act as a trusted point of contact for ad‑hoc VAT queries.
- Liaise with HMRC during routine inspections and audits.
- Share knowledge through publications, seminars and client training to strengthen the VAT team.
- Identify new advisory opportunities, manage VAT‑only clients and collaborate with colleagues across the firm for cross‑selling.
- ATT or AAT qualified (or qualified by experience); CTA qualified or working towards CTA is desirable.
- Comfortable providing advice on complex VAT issues to people with less VAT knowledge.
- Strong technical VAT and compliance skills with high attention to detail.
- Proven experience across a broad range of UK taxes, including VAT.
- Proficient IT skills, including tax software and Microsoft Office.
- Experience dealing directly with client queries, delivering concise and timely resolutions and excellent client service.
Ideally you have existing VAT knowledge from a generalist environment and wish to specialise. You are motivated to grow your VAT career and thrive in a technical, client‑focused setting.
