Youth Worker in Charge (DWP Youth Employability Hub)

Purpose:

To develop and deliver a high quality open access youth employability hub for young people aged 16 to 24 years of age, creating a safe space where young people feel supported, valued and able to take part in self-development, employment-related and educational activities which have been designed and developed with their needs and choices in mind specifically ensuring the needs of the most vulnerable young people are met.

To develop partnerships across Crawley that can provide employment and volunteering opportunities, connection and sign-posting to services such as Work Well, Connect to Work, Mental Health support, Housing, budgeting support and Employability, using both digital and face-to-face channels, and that the provision is accessible and appropriate to young people regardless of gender, disability, race, ethnic identity, social background and sexuality. To manage a mixed volunteer and paid staff team and liaise with the community, partners and agencies to develop a responsive, effective and high-quality service.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • To manage a mixed volunteer and paid staff team to deliver that can provide employment and volunteering opportunities, connection and signposting to services for young people with activities that contribute to their personal development and social education.
  • Consult and encourage young people to be involved with the planning and running of a programme of activities to encourage shared ownership and responsibility within the youth hub.
  • Ensure that the youth hub is manned and welcoming with a mix of staff, volunteers and partners as well as DWP job coaches.
  • Take a lead responsibility for the care of premises, resources and equipment and the safeguarding of young people participating in our activities.
  • To use IT and other recording systems to gather data for the purposes of monitoring and reporting.
  • Promote, champion and support the recruitment of volunteers, both internally and externally, so that they are respected and valued for their contribution to the organisation.
  • To work closely with staff and partner agencies to support young people’s needs and make referrals or signposting to services where appropriate.
  • To engage in training, study and other appropriate courses approved by CCYS and when necessary.
  • To carry out any other duties commensurate to the grade of this post as required.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Experience and understanding of work with young people and working within relevant policies and procedures.
  • Experience and understanding of safeguarding young people and working with families, partners and other agencies to provide support for young people.
  • A friendly and approachable personality with an ability to foster positive and appropriate relationships with young people.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, including good listening skills and the ability to influence and motivate volunteers and young people with enthusiasm and a positive, outgoing attitude.
  • An understanding of equality and diversity issues, and a commitment to putting equality principles into practice.
  • A sensitive and professional approach towards colleagues, volunteers and service users, mindful of confidentiality and anti-discriminatory practices.
  • Empathy with CCYS aims values and objectives.

Desirable Criteria

  • A Youth Work or related Qualification (e.g. NVQ, JNC)
  • An understanding of the core values of youth work
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements and experience implementing H&S procedures
  • An awareness of issues important to young people and how to support them
  • Experience of writing small grant applications, case studies and reports to support young people’s work
