Job Summary

Del Norte County Sheriff's Office is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Sheriff-Coroner (full-time). Compensation is bi-weekly:
Deputy Sheriff-Coroner I: $2,502.73 - $3,042.07;
Deputy Sheriff-Coroner II: $2,627.88 - $3,194.19. Upon hire, a lateral hire will receive 48 hours of paid time off for the first six months, with any unused PTO converted to compensatory time after six months.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol County roads and waterways to prevent crime and protect life and property of County residents.
  • Respond to radio messages, telephone instructions, and citizen requests to appear at scenes of disorder or crime.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations of burglaries, thefts, robberies, deaths, assaults, accidents, and other disturbances.
  • Perform physical searches of criminal suspects and arrest law violators.
  • Prepare a variety of reports and other recordkeeping documents such as arrest and investigation reports.
  • Testify in court in connection with criminal prosecutions.
  • Assemble and prepare special reports related to internal affairs and juvenile cases and investigations.
  • Serve legal papers and civil documents such as subpoenas, arrest warrants, writs of execution, orders to show cause, summonses, complaints, etc.
  • Perform jail duties such as fingerprinting, booking, and jail security.
  • Transport inmates to the court, hospital, and various other appropriate locations.
  • Conduct security checks and provide security services to special locations and facilities such as the County airport and local businesses.
  • Assure preservation of criminal evidence until properly collected or recorded.
  • Participate in criminal stakeouts as assigned.
  • Participate in coroner’s investigations, ensuring evidence is not disturbed, sealing residences, assisting in determining cause of death, securing personal property, and acting as a witness at autopsies.
  • Participate in public relations programs such as crime prevention presentations and high school visitations.
  • Attend departmental briefings and training courses.
  • Perform search and rescue duties including underwater recovery as assigned.
  • Perform higher level duties in a training capacity.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License.
  • Possession of valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
  • Completion of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Deputy Sheriff-Coroner I: Graduation from high school supplemented with some education in Police Science and completion of California POST basic academy.

Deputy Sheriff-Coroner II: Graduation from high school supplemented with some education in Police Science;
One year of experience as a Deputy Sheriff-Coroner I with the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Department or an equivalent position; possession of POST Basic Law Enforcement Certificate; ability to obtain POST Intermediate Certification within departmental time limits; successful completion of the Del Norte Sheriff’s Office Field Training Program.
