Role OverviewCheshire East Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Accountancy Technician (Grade
8) to support the delivery of high-quality financial services. The successful candidate will provide technical financial support, assist in budget monitoring and financial reporting, and ensure compliance with statutory and corporate financial regulations.
This is a key role within the finance team, supporting service managers and senior finance officers in delivering robust financial management and control.
Key Responsibilities- Provide financial and technical support to budget holders and service managers.
- Assist in the preparation, monitoring, and control of revenue and capital budgets.
- Produce accurate and timely financial reports, forecasts, and variance analyses.
- Support the year-end accounts process and statutory financial returns.
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Contribute to budget setting processes and medium-term financial planning.
- Reconcile financial data and maintain accurate accounting records.
- Assist in identifying and implementing service improvements and efficiencies.
- Support internal and external audit processes.
- Provide guidance and advice on financial systems and processes.
- Supervise or support junior finance staff where required.
- AAT qualified (Level
4) or equivalent accountancy qualification, or significant relevant experience. - Proven experience working in a finance or accountancy environment.
- Strong knowledge of budgeting, financial monitoring, and financial reporting.
- Experience supporting budget holders and non-finance managers.
- Good understanding of financial regulations and accounting principles.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data.
- Proficient in financial systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines.
- Experience working within a public sector or local authority environment (or similar regulated environment).
- Part-qualified CCAB (CIPFA, ACCA, CIMA, ACA) qualification.
- Experience working within local government finance.
- Knowledge of local authority accounting requirements and statutory returns.
- Experience with integrated finance systems (e.g., Oracle, SAP, Agresso, or similar).
- Experience supporting budget setting and medium-term financial strategies.
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff.
- Understanding of financial governance and audit requirements.
