Overview
Heavy Haul Rail, an independent rail freight partner, is looking for a skilled roster and workforce planner to support the efficient delivery of freight across the UK. The role involves managing driver and ground staff rosters, ensuring compliance with UK Rail standards, and maintaining workforce efficiency for a network that delivers 17m tonnes of freight annually.
Responsibilities- Produce efficient base and weekly rosters for all commodities.
- Issue weekly rosters and prepare daily alteration sheets for depots.
- Ensure rostering meets UK Rail principles, fatigue guidance, and company standards.
- Maintain competency data and ensure only competent staff are rostered.
- Manage drivers’ annualised hours, contracts, annual leave rosters, and ground staff rosters.
- Implement diagram alterations on the working timetable and update rosters accordingly.
- Use rostering and competence tools and industry systems to manage roster delivery.
- Arrange hotel bookings, medicals, hire vehicles, and cross‑cover as required.
- Reconcile rostering changes with appropriate systems and correct recorded hours.
- Assist Control and other departments to ensure train coverage per plan.
- Provide rostering cover as needed and undertake additional duties commensurate with the role.
- Treat health and safety of self and others with due care and comply with UK Rail safety legislation.
- Follow training, instruction, and company procedures applicable to the position.
- Inform line manager of any identified health and safety issues.
- Use safety equipment trained for and in accordance with company policy.
- Ensure rosters comply with fatigue requirements, minimum rest periods, and internal control checks.
- Adhere to the Drugs and Alcohol policy and other HS&E procedures.
- Participate in any safety training courses as directed.
- Approach safety as a non‑critical role while maintaining competence.
- Good knowledge of freight train operations and railway geography.
- Solid general education and experience in workforce planning or similar roles.
- Excellent organisational and self‑motivation skills.
- Strong communication abilities.
- Computer literacy, including Windows applications, ORS, and railway industry systems.
- Knowledge of drivers’ and ground staff conditions of service.
- Ability to work regularly in an office environment and be flexible to meet work needs.
