Overview

The Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist in a licensed pharmacy. The role includes technical, non‑judgemental aspects of medication preparation, distribution, record keeping and inventory control. All tasks are subject to verification by a registered nurse or pharmacist. The technician supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, the Code of Ethics, and Business Standards.

Certain tasks such as compounding may be restricted by state law and performed only by licensed individuals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assists with the preparation of medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
  • Checks all orders for completeness, verifies patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Under direct supervision, admixtures drugs as ordered by physicians accurately and timely, following department, OSHA, and inter‑office guidelines.
  • Calculates correct dosage volumes, converts between metric and apothecary equivalents, assists in counting controlled drugs weekly, and maintains records.
  • Properly disposes materials used during mixing of chemo or non‑chemo IVs, assists in cleaning hoods daily, checks drugs monthly for out‑dates, and performs other quality assurance activities.
  • Keeps accurate temperature logs and logs for all protocol and patient‑assistance drugs.
  • Maintains proper control documentation of medications, including lot numbers, inventory control, label preparation, billing, and basic data entry into department automation.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. 0–3 years experience in a pharmacy.

Physical Demands

Full range of body motion, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, ability to read and note appropriate measurements. Requires sitting or standing for extensive periods and occasionally lifts up to 40 lbs. Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Work Environment

Exposure to direct contact with patients and potential exposure to toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and chemotherapeutic agents.
