Position: Assistant Project Manager (Geotechnical Background)

Salary: £33,000 - £40,000 + Monthly Bonus incentives

The Opportunity

This role is ideal for an experienced geotechnical professional looking to transition from a predominantly site-based role into project management. Working within a growing project management team, you will manage smaller-scale geotechnical and ground investigation projects while receiving support and mentorship from senior project managers.

You will play a key role in coordinating field operations, managing resources, and ensuring project objectives are delivered safely, efficiently, and profitably. This position offers a clear pathway towards a full Project Manager role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the management and delivery of ground investigation and rail infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate field teams, subcontractors, plant, and specialist suppliers.
  • Support project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Monitor project performance against programme, budget, and quality requirements.
  • Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and operational teams throughout project life cycles.
  • Prepare project documentation, reports, and commercial updates.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Mentor and coordinate geotechnical site teams.
  • Support the Head of Project Management and senior project managers in delivering larger projects.
Essential Skills
  • MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Engineering Geology, Geology, Physical Geography, or a related discipline.
  • Full clean UK driving licence.
  • Previous experience within geotechnical engineering, ground investigation, or rail infrastructure projects.
  • Experience supervising field investigations, site teams, or subcontractors.
  • Strong organisational and project coordination skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Commercial awareness and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Desire to develop a long-term career in project management
