Overview
Urban Planner II at Baxter & Woodman. Location options:
Katy, TX or Bannockburn, Chicago, Crystal Lake, or Naperville, IL offices.
- Delegate project tasks and support staff as needed.
- Assist in developing Planning Dept. graphic standards and product templates.
- Develop working knowledge of ArcGIS Urban and related software.
- Provide QA/QC reviews of project deliverables.
- Assist with business development activities, including meetings, statements of qualifications (SOQs), and proposals.
- Develop planning studies and provide technical analysis for short- and long-range projects; support land development services to municipal clients.
- Review and revise municipal regulatory codes and ordinances to achieve desired results.
- Facilitate public engagement activities and produce engagement materials; gather stakeholder input.
- Communicate complex planning concepts to the public with graphic and conceptual renderings; present to clients, public officials, and the public.
- Perform on-call staff planner functions for local municipalities as required.
- Coordinate with colleagues on stormwater management, grading, utilities, transportation, and other civil engineering-related issues.
- Review permit applications for compliance with plans, codes, and regulations.
- Support national and state conference presentations and involvement in professional organizations (e.g., Texas APA).
- Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, or related field.
- 4+ years of experience in urban/transportation planning, parks and open space planning, or comprehensive planning projects.
- Experience leading tasks in community, urban, and regional planning; knowledge of transportation, parks/open space, land use, energy, sustainability, and resiliency.
- Experience with special area planning for districts, neighborhoods, and corridors is a plus.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, GIS software, and Microsoft Office.
- Strong technical writing, graphic, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to analyze demographic data and identify trends; ability to interpret and apply land development codes and regulations.
- Experience with public engagement strategies and tools; ability to explain technical issues to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work collaboratively with developers, designers, and public officials.
- Knowledge of urban spatial structure and municipal systems operations (e.g., utilities, stormwater).
- Willingness and ability to travel throughout the Houston metropolitan area with own transportation.
- Bachelor’s degree as listed above.
The pay range for this role is $75,000-$95,000. Actual compensation packages are based on factors such as skill set, depth of experience, and certifications.
