Shaw Media seeks a strategic and hands-on Controller to lead all financial operations, ensure regulatory compliance, and act as a key business partner to drive financial success.

Shaw Media publishes over 150 titles in Illinois and Iowa. Its holdings include websites, newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and a digital marketing services division. Founded in Dixon, Illinois, Shaw Media has been privately owned by the Shaw family since its inception in 1851.

• Financial Reporting & Compliance: Oversee all general accounting, ensuring accurate financial statements and strict GAAP compliance.
• Financial Reporting & Compliance: Design and maintain robust internal controls and policies; streamline monthly close and external audit processes.
• Financial Reporting & Compliance: Ensure full compliance with all laws (tax, government, FCC regulations).
• Strategic Planning & Analysis: Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and detailed variance analysis.
• Strategic Planning & Analysis: Provide high-quality financial insights, modeling, KPIs, and presentations for the leadership and Board.
• Strategic Planning & Analysis: Identify opportunities for efficiency and recommend strategic pricing/process enhancements.
• Operational Management: Manage core operational accounting functions: AP, AR, billing, payroll, fixed assets, and revenue recognition.
• Operational Management: Strategically monitor and optimize cash flow.
• Team Leadership (Crystal Lake, IL): Hire, train, and mentor the accounting staff.
• Team Leadership (Crystal Lake, IL): Provide coaching, manage workflow, and model high standards of competence, integrity, and professionalism.

• Skills/Knowledge: General Ledger/Accounting Systems; MS Excel Proficiency including Pivot Tables, Lookup Functions, Advanced Formulas, Data Modeling, and Macros;

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Personal Certification: CPA designation is preferred.
• Experience: 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including 3+ years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role.
• Technical: Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
• Software: Experience with industry-specific platforms (Vision Data, Naviga, Marketron) is a plus.

Pay: $110,000 – $120,000 per year
