Position: Surgical Technician - Operating Room- Full Time

  • 7‑Bed Emergency Department (plus a dedicated triage area)
  • Awaiting EDAP (Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics) Designation (scheduled for this fall)
  • Awaiting ASRH (Acute Stroke Ready Hospital) Designation
  • 11 Inpatient Rooms + 2 ICU Rooms
  • 4 Operating Rooms (ORs)
  • Hospitalists On‑Site 24/7 – Continuous inpatient care presence
  • Emergency Physicians On‑Site 24/7
  • Leadership Support:
    Nurse leaders on‑site Monday‑Friday during business hours. RN House Coordinators covering nights, weekends, and leadership gaps.
Responsibilities

Works under the direction of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate the physician in performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

May include day, evening, night, weekend, holiday, and on‑call hours. Report‑back time for on‑call per department guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintains vigilance for the sterile field.
  • Assists the surgical team before, during, and after surgery by performing the following duties:
    • Checks instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
    • Scrubs, gowns, gloves, and sets up sterile table with instruments and supplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed for each procedure.
    • Assists with patient placement and positioning on the table.
    • Assists in draping the sterile field according to procedure/physician preference.
    • Performs appropriate counts for sponges, needles, and instruments with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
    • Gowns and gloves the surgeon and assistants, creates and maintains a sterile field, and maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
    • Passes instruments, etc. to the surgeon during the procedure. May sponge the operative site, hold retractors during surgery, cut sutures and cauterize previously clamped vessels as directed by surgeon. Prepares sterile dressings and, if applicable and at the direction of the surgeon, applies and secures dressings.
    • Assists other members of the team with cleaning the operating room after each procedure and prepping the room for the next patient.
  • Participates in department performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains positive interpersonal relations with physicians, nurses, and other members of the health‑care team to promote a collaborative approach to providing efficient and high‑quality patient care.
  • Understands age‑related patient care needs and provides care appropriately.
  • Able to adapt to the needs of each physician's requests and preferences and communicates this to the Team Lead to update all staff and preference/case cards accordingly.
  • Is a mentor for new employees and new graduate surgical technologists by supporting them.
  • Enhances partner growth through promoting attainment of national certification. Assists partners in obtaining education required to achieve national specialty certification and maintain the same.
  • Completes projects as assigned by the Team Lead.
  • Assists in training of new partners or students successfully and offers constructive feedback during the training process.
