Position: Police Officer LATERALS or CERTIFIABLE CANDIDATES ONLY

Police Officers are generally charged with keeping the peace, enforcing the law and providing safety and security in the community. A Police Officer shall exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties, but is responsible to follow orders of the Shift Commander in accordance with Department policy. Officers are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner when dealing with others;

always keeping in mind the highest principles of police service. They are sworn to safeguard the lives and property of all persons and to protect the constitutional rights of all citizens, never letting their personal feelings interfere with their oath.

General Responsibilities

Officers shall comply with all lawful orders directed to them by superiors to the best of their ability. They shall treat all persons within their scope of authority in a respectful manner and take necessary actions to insure the protection of their civil and constitutional rights. At any time, officers may be placed in situations that demand physical and mental endurance.

Therefore, they must maintain a high degree of physical and mental fitness.

Lateral Transfer

We accept lateral transfers. Any applicant that passes the initial application screening may be on an accelerated hiring process timeline.

Effective January 1, 2023, the initial appointment of a new hire above the established starting rate of pay and vacation schedule may be made by the city if the decision to hire a new employee who is currently employed in good standing with another law enforcement agency is made. The Chief shall make a recommendation to the Police and Fire Commission, who must approve the applicant meets the experience requirements.

Wages:
Starting salary consistent with years of experience as stated in the association contract.

Vacation:
Lateral entry hires prior years of full‑time service will be credited toward vacation amounts as stated in the association contract.

Seniority:
This provision does not alter the probation requirement, the seniority level of the new hire, or any other years of service‑related benefit with the City of Cudahy.

Duties
  • Officers shall be aware of and comply with all Rules, Regulations, Policies and Procedures, and General Orders of the Department and are responsible to keep abreast of any additions, changes, or modifications of same.
  • Regular, predictable and prompt attendance. Report for roll call at specified time and place, wearing the uniform of the day with all equipment necessary to sustain them until the completion of their tour of duty.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness and operating condition all property, apparatus, equipment and tools.
  • Enforce State of Wisconsin traffic and criminal laws and Municipal Ordinances. Apprehend criminals.
  • Maintain current knowledge of laws, ordinances and law enforcement procedures.
  • Respond to calls for service, investigate complaints from citizens, and investigate motor vehicle accidents. Prepare related reports. Maintain notes and records as required by law and Department procedures.
  • Patrol by various means (i.e. vehicle, foot, ATV, etc.) in order todetect and prevent crime.
  • Process crime scenes and protect major crime scenes until relieved.
  • Process, package, label and inventory evidence and property received or recovered.
  • Testify in Federal, State and Municipal courts.
  • Serve court documents, such as subpoenas and protection orders.
  • Conduct demonstrations, tours and public speeches to community groups and citizens, and respond to community concerns.
  • Participate in crowd control functions.
  • Learn and utilize technologies that will sustain and improve the level of service provided.
  • Ability to work flexible or extended hours.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Shift Sergeant/Command Officer.
