JOB SUMMARYThe Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
CommunicationCollaborates with the leadership team to identify and resolve unit issues.
- Keeps co-workers and intra‑op staff informed of any updates/issues.
- Follows written instructions as needed.
Complies with established departmental and organization policies/guidelines.
- Maintains, operates, and monitors all equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and department standards.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application.
- Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.
- Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.
The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS EducationHigh School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.
ExperiencePrevious Surgical Technologist experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.
Licensure- Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist in accordance with Virginia Code
* 54.1-2956.12. - Must hold and maintain a national surgical technologist certification (e.g., NBSTSA CST) or meet another Virginia Board-approved pathway (military training, DOL-registered apprenticeship, or applicable grandfathering criteria).
- Must provide proof of compliance prior to hire and maintain active registration throughout employment.
Ability to create and maintain a sterile field. Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
