Job Summary

The Pharmacy vision is to deliver optimal medication management across all dimensions of care, every time. Each pharmacy team member is essential in ensuring that UVA Health Northern VA Culpeper Pharmacy exists to ensure safe, effective, and affordable medication use in our communities, one person at a time. The Pharmacy Technician is part of the healthcare team, collaborates with other members, and provides optimal care.

The Technician accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with current policies and procedures. The Technician competently works in general and specialized areas of pharmacy practice.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in the training of new employees
  • Fill, prepare, and deliver medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner
  • Consistently follow policy and procedures
  • Ensure adequate supplies for continuous patient care
  • Triage and escalates any questions or issues outside the technician’s scope of practice to the staff pharmacist or supervisor as needed
  • Use appropriate systems for processing patient information
  • Maintain quality in accordance with departmental and legal requirements
  • Appropriately operate pharmacy equipment
  • Maintain considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects
  • Demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and communication skills with other healthcare professionals
  • Other duties as required
Communication
  • Ensure timely and consistent communication
  • Respond to service line requests and inquiries
  • Greets and assists visitors to the department
  • Answer all incoming telephone calls and provide accurate information as needed
  • Communicate clearly with other healthcare professionals
Quality
  • Prioritize workflow to ensure all services are performed in a timely manner
  • Maintain knowledge of medication names, routes, doses, and adverse effects
Teamwork
  • Participate in onboarding of other team members
  • Share and initiate regular professional communication with co‑workers
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Adjust activities to accommodate the needs of team members and internal customers
  • Resolve conflicts independently as appropriate
  • Accept responsibility for actions and act positively upon feedback
Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Permanent experience:
    Minimum 18 months of relevant experience, 1 year of sterile compounding experience, or 1 year of employment required.
  • Licensure:
    Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (ExCPT) required.
Additional Skills & Requirements
  • State Registration and/or evidence of renewal required for both Pharmacists and Technicians fifteen days prior to expiration.
  • Technicians must be certified through PTCB, National Health career Association (NHA) or be actively enrolled in pharmacy school, or hold an FPGEE or FPGEC certification.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Basic technology skills.
  • Ability to drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed.
  • Ability to work as part of a high performing, change‑ready and resilient team.
Physical Demands

Work requires constant sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs occasionally; for any weight over 35 lbs use Safe Handling Equipment. The job description may be amended at any time at the sole discretion of UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper.

Other
  • May require use of safety equipment such as HEPA mask for infection prevention
  • On‑call responsibilities as directed
  • Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed
