Position: Public Safety Technology Specialist I

NEW POSITION The Public Safety Technology Specialist I position serves as an entry-level IT support role within the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office and work directly with County of Culpeper's Information Technology Department. This position provides day-today technical support, troubleshooting, and assistance to county employees while maintaining technology assets and supporting departmental operations. The Public Safety Technology Specialist I reports to the Sheriff or his designee and plays a vital role in ensuring the county's technology infrastructure runs smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first-level help desk support for county employees, responding to technical issues via phone, email, and in-person
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network connectivity issues
  • Set up, configure, and issue devices including computers, laptops, tablets, and phones to county staff
  • Maintain accurate inventory and perform asset tracking of all technology equipment
  • Assist network administrators with basic network maintenance tasks
  • Install, update, and maintain software applications across county departments
  • Create and maintain documentation for common technical issues and solutions
  • Provide basic training to end users on technology systems and applications
  • Participate in the 24/7/365 on-call rotation for after-hours support as needed
  • Assist with technology equipment moves, additions, and changes
  • Perform routine maintenance on printers, copiers, and other peripheral devices
  • Support county meetings and events with audio/visual technology setup as needed
  • Assist with Body Cameras, Fleet Cameras, and other law enforcement related technologies.

This position may handle, access, and support technology systems containing sensitive, confidential, and criminal justice information in accordance with County policy, CJIS requirements, and Sheriff’s Office standards.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field preferred
  • 0-2 years of experience in IT support or related technical field
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Driver’s License required
Technical Skills
  • Basic understanding of Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of computer hardware components and peripherals
  • Familiarity with basic networking concepts and troubleshooting
  • Understanding of help desk ticketing systems
  • Basic knowledge of cybersecurity best practices
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly
Certifications (Preferred but not required)
  • CompTIA A+
  • Microsoft Certified:
    Fundamentals certifications
  • HDI Customer Service Representative
Required

Skills and Abilities
  • Strong customer service orientation and communication skills
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users
  • Detail-oriented with good organizational and documentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Problem-solving skills and analytical thinking
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to various county facilities
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when working with sensitive, protected, or law-enforcement-related information.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as moderate. Tasks typically require physical effort of lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to 50 lbs. May require extended periods of time sitting at a keyboard or workstation. May be required to work on weekends, and on-call depending on system requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Essential functions are regularly performed in an office setting. This position may require working irregular hours, including nights, weekends, or holidays due to the nature of public safety operations. The role may involve being on-call during emergencies or critical incidents.
