Job Description and Duties
Direct the operations and provide daily management of the Museum of Culpeper History (MCH). This includes leadership and oversight of all aspects of daily operations. Ensure the facility is well‑maintained and collections and exhibits are interpreted and preserved to the highest standard.
Work with staff, including the Education Coordinator and a Visitor Services Coordinator, in addition to volunteers and interns, while assisting donors, visitors, and researchers. The Executive Director prepares a monthly report for the Board of Directors and engages board members and volunteers. The executive director will help enhance philanthropy, direct fundraising campaigns, and assist with the development of strategic plans.
The successful candidate will oversee all the financial management of the museum, including preparing an annual budget, leading and administering fundraising campaigns, and overseeing most special events. They will research, write, and oversee grants, and develop new exhibits and refresh displays throughout the year. Responsibilities also include maintaining and documenting existing archives and artifact collections.
Work with the Education Coordinator to develop and market engaging in‑house and outreach programs and activities. Work with the Visitor Services Coordinator to enhance visitation, support volunteers, and provide guidance on merchandising, product identification, inventory control, and visitor experience.
Develop strong relationships with community organizations, local businesses, and agricultural professionals, and engage with local and state governments and their representatives. Carry out all other duties as assigned to operate an efficient and well‑managed museum.
It is important for the successful candidate to live in the town or county of Culpeper to be the face and voice of the organization.
Education and Experience- Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, or a related field is desirable; an advanced degree is strongly preferred.
- 3+ years of museum or historic site management experience with progressive leadership responsibility and staff supervision is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Salary: $75,000. Benefits include paid holidays and paid leave. Health coverage negotiable.
