UPMC Western Maryland is seeking a Full-time Surgical Tech First Assist to support our Operating Room.

This position will work varied dayshift hours, including rotating weekends and holidays on-call.

The Certified Surgical First Assistant provides intraoperative assistance in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other technical functions to support surgeons in performing safe and effective surgeries. In addition, the role includes preoperative and postoperative duties to ensure comprehensive patient care. The assistant works under the surgeon's supervision, following hospital policies and legal regulations, and may specialize in specific surgical areas or perform general duties as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites.
  • Transport patients to the operating room, help position them, and cover with sterile drapes.
  • Communicate effectively and collaborate with surgeons, team members, and other departments.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and other disciplines.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and assist in their implementation.
  • Assist with hemostasis using techniques such as clamping, cauterizing, ligating vessels, applying clips, and using local hemostatic agents.
  • Manage supplies, equipment, lasers, and instrumentation related to the surgical specialty under the clinician's guidance.
  • Supervise the use of supplies and equipment to ensure patient safety.
  • Handle equipment such as fracture tables, head and body stabilizers, C-arm extensions, and others as needed.
  • Evaluate the patient post-procedure for positioning-related damage, report findings, and document appropriately.
  • Support cost containment efforts through prudent use of materials and equipment.
  • Provide visualization of the operative site through proper placement of retractors, packing, tissue manipulation, suctioning, and suturing.
  • Position the patient according to surgeon’s instructions, ensuring comfort and safety, padding pressure points, and maintaining circulation.
  • Close wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous, skin) as directed, using appropriate suturing techniques and materials.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving initiative related to patient care and OR operations.
  • Use sutures and closure techniques such as running, interrupted, subcuticular, and skin closure methods as per surgeon’s directives.
  • Apply tourniquets, vessel loops, clamps, and digital pressure as needed, understanding their indications and contraindications.
  • Participate in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques when appropriate.
  • Assist with the closure of body planes and secure drainage systems.
  • Choose and apply suitable wound dressings, including liquid, spray, absorbent, and immobilizing types.
