Hollow ware Silversmith Trainee focuses on safety, accuracy, and quality while learning new fundamental silversmith skills to be translated to more and more complex items over two years.

Responsibilities: AT THE BENCH
  • Assist Silversmiths in all areas concerningsmithing to build a strong foundation of smithing skills in order to interpret blueprints and fabricate basic retail items based on the designs and tolerances set forth in the production artwork to meet company QA standards within the prescribed trainee timeline.
  • Silversmithing trainees will learn the following over the course of the trainee program:
  • Balance efficiency, focus on detail, in-process QA, and limiting inventory failure
  • Utilize multiple torch sizes and types, from gasflux pin torches to large-scale soldering and annealing torches
  • Apply correct sequences of silver solder from high temp 800 to lower temp 560 to the lowest temp tin/silver solder
  • Correctly utilize solder stop out, files, burs,sanding belts, and scotch stones in order to perform all levels of solder cleanup and over-run prevention
  • Complex cleanup and fitting of the cast, die-struck,machined, spun, and hand-fabricated components
  • Comprehension of annealing temperatures of gold,sterling silver, brass, bronze, copper, and ferrous metals
  • Hand Hallmark a wide variety of items
  • Minimize porosity in solder seams and castings with the use of laser weld and appropriate filler wire, rotary planisher, swiss hammer, and steel planishing hammers
  • Trainees will be exposed to planishing, forming, and raising
ALTERNATE TOOLING
  • Trainees will be exposed to the following off-bench techniques:
  • Hand forging of steel punches, chasing tools, snaring irons and stakes
  • Chasing tools, punches, and gravers
  • Drill press and flex shaft to drill, tap, and thread components
  • Learn how to set up and operate power equipment, including the draw bench, jump shears, band saw, disc and belt sander, power press, kick press, spinning lathe, machining lathe, and any other tools essential to the job.
DATA
  • Detailed focus on organizing work instructions,drawings, and notes, capturing in-process images while writing and following

    SOPs for new and existing products.

    Verify and record daily all individual production time spent on Production Work Orders, Development Work Orders, Engineering Work Orders, and Tooling Work Orders. Return all precious metal scrap to the Vault at the end of each job. Provide management with work-in-progress updates and estimated completion schedules.
  • Assist Team Lead in organizing WIP, Plaques, WO's, and COMs.
Qualifications:
  • The ability to effectively communicate in English is essential

  • Ability to read blueprints and effectively fabricate three-dimensional objects
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Computer literate
  • BFA/MFA in metals and jewelry
Preferred:
  • Basic knowledge of laser welder machine
  • Advanced Computer / CAD skills
