Assistant Accountant

North Lanarkshire | Up to £38,000 | Full Time | Permanent

HRC Recruitment are delighted to be exclusively working with a growing SME based in North Lanarkshire to recruit an ambitious Assistant Accountant.

Reporting directly to the Financial Controller, you'll gain exposure across the full finance function, making this the ideal role for someone who is eager to develop their technical accounting skills and progress into a Management Accountant position.

you’ll play a key role in the month-end process and support the smooth running of the finance function, including:

• Taking ownership of the monthly close process, ensuring deadlines are consistently achieved.
• Preparing monthly management accounts and supporting schedules.
• Posting month-end journals, including accruals, prepayments, payroll and depreciation.
• Reconciling balance sheet control accounts, investigating and resolving reconciling items.
• Maintaining an accurate, complete and fully reconciled general ledger.

• Overseeing the sales ledger, purchase ledger and bank reconciliation processes.
• Reviewing reconciliations to ensure financial transactions are recorded accurately and on time.
• Supporting and mentoring the Accounts Assistant, providing guidance and training where required.
• Providing cover for transactional finance duties during periods of absence.

• Processing the monthly payroll accurately and on time.
• Providing cover for weekly payroll when required.
• Completing payroll reconciliations and associated accounting entries.

• Maintaining the fixed asset register.
• Supporting strong financial controls across the finance function.
• Identifying opportunities to improve finance processes and systems.
• Helping develop more efficient month-end procedures.

• Previous experience in an Assistant Accountant or similar finance role.
• Experience supporting month-end processes.
• Strong reconciliation and journal posting experience.
• Payroll experience (or willingness to develop in this area).
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
• A proactive mindset with a desire to continuously improve processes.
• A collaborative approach and confidence supporting colleagues across the finance team.
• AAT qualified or actively studying towards ACCA/CIMA (desirable but not essential).
