Nature and ScopeUnder the direction of the Sports Director(s), the Sports Specialty Instructor implements sport‑specific training and skill development. The instructor demonstrates and explains skills and rules, helps beginners learn basic techniques, and assists experienced athletes in sharpening their abilities. Performance must align with the YMCA’s policies, goals, mission, values, and objectives, emphasizing member service, program knowledge, and safety.
Responsibilities (including, but not limited to)- Provide instruction in sports activities.
- Participate in special events and activities related to their sport.
- Maintain effective relationships with schools, parents, participants, and other groups.
- Create an environment that supports program goals through diverse activities and instruction.
- Answer inquiries from participants, parents, volunteers, or stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Attend staff meetings and approved training as required.
- Conduct assessments of program participants.
- Must be 21 years or older with a high school diploma or GED.
- 2+ years of coaching or instruction experience, OR 2+ years of competitive experience at the college level or equivalent in the sport.
- Must currently hold or be able to acquire required sport certification.
- Knowledge of sport rules and technique.
- Ability to motivate, coach, and lead participants.
- High degree of interpersonal communication, conflict management, and customer‑service skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, parents, volunteers, and staff.
- Required certifications:
Safe Sport and CDC Heads Up Concussion course; CPR/First Aid within 30 days of hire. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Criminal background check.
The employee may be required to stand, walk, run, sit, handle or feel objects, reach, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to lift up to 60 pounds.
