The YMCA of Metro Atlanta is a thought-leader and best-in-class provider in education, wellness, youth development, and community-building. We are looking for a Swim Instructor to join our team and carry out our mission to positively impact lives and communities across the state.
At the Y, we provide high-quality literacy and STEAM-infused learning, sports, aquatics, day and resident camps, teen leadership development programs, and employment opportunities to over 3,000 children, 58,000 youth and teens, and 200,000 members. We also engage over 25,000 volunteers and donors from across Atlanta to share in the gift of supporting their communities.
Nature And ScopeThis position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.
Minimum Requirements- At least 16 years of age.
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
- Intro to the Y’s Cause and Culture, Living our Cause & I Hear you. Service with Care e-learning within first 30 days.
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
- Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.

The effectiveness of this position is primarily measured by the stated satisfaction of members and ensuring a safe, clean and controlled environment in accordance with the Metro Atlanta YMCA Philosophy.
Work Environment & Physical Demands- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check including Criminal Record check, Drug Screening and motor vehicle record (MVR) according to company policy.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the US without current or future sponsorship.
