FREELANCE ARTS CURATOR - BAND 6 EQUIVALENT

The Arts Curator (Sir Bobby Robson Institute) role is an exciting freelance opportunity to develop a public arts programme for The Sir Bobby Robson Institute (SBRI), a new purpose‑built facility for the Freeman Hospital site. The design, finish and feel of the building is to be further enhanced through a series of commissioned and integrated artworks. This role contributes to applying creativity to enhance the hospital experience and deepen engagement with our local communities.

You will be a motivated self‑starter with a passion for creative community engagement, commissioning artworks, and for health and wellbeing. You will support the Head of Arts Programmes in the delivery of the SBRI Arts Plan, commissioning artwork through participatory community and stakeholder creative opportunities, including Newcastle Hospitals staff, patients and families, to enhance the SBRI site, promote health and wellbeing and engage with the wider community.

Main duties of the job
  • Lead delivery of the SBRI Arts Plan for Newcastle Hospitals Charity, working in partnership with a range of diverse organisations and community groups.
  • Manage arts projects and work with artists following best practice. Communicate clearly with multiple stakeholders:
    Trust staff, patients, artists, cultural and community partners.
  • Advocate for the SBRI Arts Plan across the Trust, demonstrate specialist knowledge of arts commissioning, and stay informed of current arts practice.
Job responsibilities
  • Manage, deliver and evaluate a significant programme of integrated arts projects for SBRI within the arts team for Newcastle Hospitals Charity, including large‑scale murals through engagement on Trust sites.
  • Manage, deliver and support any creative freelancers engaged in delivery within the SBRI Public Arts Plan.
  • With the Head of Arts Programmes, manage SBRI artist recruitment & appointment, including drafting and seeking approval of artists briefs.
  • Plan and deliver the artist induction.
  • Work with Head of Arts Programme, artists and stakeholders to develop consultation/engagement plans for each commission as appropriate.
  • Manage and embed a full creative workshop engagement programme within the SBRI Public Arts Plan, to ensure wide community representation and encourage support and visibility for future recruitment to clinical trials.
  • Ensure visibility of the heritage and achievements of SBRU, linking to potential donated and/or loaned collection items.
  • Implement and monitor policies, processes and guidance of the SBRI Public Arts.
  • Oversee the design development and approval process in line with National Arts in Hospitals Guidelines.
  • Implement and monitor policies, processes and guidance for SBRI arts commissioning programmes to ensure compliance with the standards set out by the Fundraising Regulator, the Charity Commission and the Trust.
  • Lead on the SBRI Public Arts Plan to identify and develop opportunities to support Charity fundraising.
  • Represent Newcastle Hospitals Charity and the Trust in internal and public‑facing forums.
  • Work closely with colleagues within the NHS to raise the profile of the SBRI campaign through the Public Arts Plan.
  • Actively contribute, where necessary, to key committees such as the SBRI Design Group, SBRI Project Board, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Committee.
  • Provision of progress reports/presentations and supplementary information to the Charity Committee, the Charity Director, Head of Arts Programmes and key SBRI stakeholders, as required.
  • With the Head of Arts Programme agree project budgets, artists fees and payment structure.
  • Work closely with the Charity Finance team and appropriate Trust teams to ensure accurate record and reporting in relation to SBRI Public Arts Plan activities.
  • Work closely with the Charity Communications team in helping to publicise and raise awareness of the SBRI Public Arts Plan.
  • Work with the Charity Events and Volunteer Manager to develop suitable events to accompany delivery of the SBRI Public Arts Plan.
