One-to-One Support Assistant - Torfaen

September 2026 Start

Are you good at building trust with children and helping them stay engaged when learning becomes difficult?

Academics is working with a primary school in Torfaen that is looking for a One-to-One Support Assistant to join them from September 2026.

The focus of this position will be providing consistent, individual support to a pupil who requires additional help to access the curriculum and take part confidently in school life. You will work closely with the class teacher to understand the pupil's needs and provide support throughout the school day.

You may assist with activities including phonics, reading, writing and maths, while also helping the pupil develop their independence and confidence. The ability to break instructions into manageable steps, provide encouragement and recognise when a different approach is needed will be important in this role.

Alongside the individual support, you will work as part of the wider classroom team and help the pupil feel included in lessons and everyday school activities. The school is looking for somebody dependable who can form a positive relationship with the pupil.

What we're looking for:
  • Previous experience supporting children on a one-to-one basis is desirable.
  • A genuine commitment to helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.
  • The ability to adapt your approach to meet the needs of an individual pupil.
  • Patience, consistency and a positive attitude when supporting children.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with teaching staff.
  • An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC).
  • Two recent professional references.
Why apply through Academics?
  • Competitive daily pay of £93, with holiday pay included.
  • Personalised support from a consultant who understands life in the classroom and is there to guide you every step of the way.
  • A choice of flexible and long-term opportunities, helping you find a role that fits your experience, ambitions and lifestyle.

Salary will be determined by the successful candidate's qualifications and relevant experience, and will be in accordance with the client's pay policy.
