As a Textile Engineer, you will be a subject matter expert in the research, development, and commercialization of textiles and soft materials across Exemplis brands including Sit On It Seating, Albany Park, and Timbuk
2. Your work will ensure we deliver best‑in‑class materials that meet standards of durability, comfort, performance, sustainability, and compliance.
Partnering with Product Engineering, Design, Quality, Sourcing, and Manufacturing, you will build a toolbox of innovative, tested, and certified textiles that give Exemplis a competitive edge in both commercial furniture and direct‑to‑consumer markets. Based at our Cypress, CA headquarters, this role also collaborates closely with our Buena Park and Tijuana operations.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions- Collaborate with Mexico-based teams to approve textiles for production readiness.
- Partner with Product Development to optimize existing materials and identify new opportunities for innovation.
- Manage material certifications and ensure compliance with regulatory standards (PFAS, CAL
117, ACT, ANSI/BIFMA, GREENGUARD, REACH). - Evaluate and approve customer-specified materials (COM) for Sit On It Seating, balancing performance, feasibility, and timelines.
- Provide technical guidance on substitutions, risk assessments, and testing for customer-supplied fabrics.
- Develop and implement textile testing methods; coordinate lab testing and performance evaluations.
- Maintain accurate product specifications and documentation in PLM and project management systems.
- Partner with Marketing, Manufacturing, Sourcing, and Quality to ensure feasibility and performance requirements are met.
- Benchmark competitor products and conduct patent research to establish performance, sustainability, and cost standards.
- Investigate and resolve textile-related issues in development and production.
- Recommend improvements in durability, sustainability, and efficiency.
- Stay current on sustainable materials, technologies, and processes; recommend enhancements where feasible.
- Contribute to Exemplis’ sustainability goals and material innovation roadmap.
- Support NPI stage‑gate processes by ensuring textile readiness and risk mitigation.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering, Materials Science, Textile Technology, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in textile engineering, development, or materials science (furniture, apparel, luggage, or related industries).
- Strong knowledge of textile manufacturing (weaving, knitting, coating, laminating, finishing).
- Experience with textile testing (abrasion, colorfastness, tensile strength, flame retardancy, chemical compliance).
- Familiarity with compliance standards (CAL
117, ACT, BIFMA, PFAS, REACH). - Proficiency with Microsoft Office, PLM, and project management tools.
- Ability to handle rolls of fabric and testing samples.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
