Campus Safety Officer II

Location: Cypress College

Department: CC Campus Safety

Employment: 100% (Full Time)

Work Schedule: Thursday - Sunday, 11:30 AM - 10:00 PM (Schedule and shift subject to change as needed)

Primary

Purpose:

This position is responsible for performing a wide range of activities to promote campus safety, support traffic and parking control, and ensure the security of buildings and equipment.

Responsibilities

Patrol campus and parking lots on foot, bicycle or in vehicle; respond to emergency and dispatch calls according to district policies and procedures; administer first aid; escort students, staff and the public; participate in campus safety drills. Enforce campus safety, security and traffic/parking rules and regulations, issue citations, assure proper signage and compliance with codes; monitor buildings, parking lots and grounds for hazards, prepare hazard reports and unlock/secure buildings and reduce flags.

Assist in maintenance and repair of department equipment, investigate unauthorized persons or activities, conduct preliminary investigations and reports, respond to reported crimes, disturbances and incidents; interview witnesses and prepare records and reports, testify in court, conduct evacuations, interview students for mental health concerns, monitor electronic security systems and notify authorities. Plan and ensure safe conditions for special events, assist visitors, students and staff with directions, transport monies, assist in road emergencies, operate equipment, deliver supplies and assist medical personnel.

Communicate with public safety agencies, train and guide staff, learn new technologies, and participate in diversity initiatives.

Working Relationships

The Campus Safety Officer II maintains frequent contact with district personnel, faculty, students and the public.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of district organization, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement and security methods.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and vehicle control procedures.
  • Knowledge of report writing techniques.
  • Knowledge of fire safety equipment.
  • Knowledge of record‑keeping techniques.
  • Ability to read, learn, understand and apply applicable laws, penal codes, health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using two-way radio, telephone and to large groups.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle and ride a bicycle; walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to recognize and recall facts, faces, figures, details and discern a wide range of sounds.
  • Ability to administer first aid and CPR.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand scope of authority in making independent decisions.
  • Ability to review situations accurately and determine appropriate action according to established guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Special Requirements
  • Certificate of completion of Penal Code 832 Course or certificate of CA POST Basic Academy Course.
  • Valid driver’s license (proof required upon offer).
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification (proof required upon offer).
  • Three-year DMV driving record will be evaluated if selected.
  • Certification of completion of SB 1626 (State of California) and SB 390.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Certification in 832 Penal Code Laws of Arrest or certificate of CA POST Basic Academy.
  • Relevant experience and training that demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

Working Conditions

Outdoor and indoor environment under various weather conditions; lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs unassisted; running, climbing stairs, ladders or walls; extended walk or stand periods; exposure to antisocial or criminal behavior; frequent interruptions; fine and gross motor skills; driving required.

Salary Range: $5,765–$6,947 per month (includes 5% shift differential)
