Temporary Prison Officer - Guernsey Prison

Red Snapper Recruitment is currently recruiting for experienced, trained Prison Officers to join Guernsey Prison on a temporary basis for approximately 3-4 months.

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced Prison Officers looking for a temporary assignment in Guernsey, with travel to and from the island and accommodation provided by the States of Guernsey Government.

The Role

As a Prison Officer, you will contribute to maintaining a safe and secure prison environment while supporting prisoners to address offending behaviour and prepare for their return to the community.

  • Daily supervision and management of the prison population.
  • Supporting the administration of the Incentives and Earned Privileges (IEP) scheme.
  • Undertaking prisoner escorts and movements.
  • Carrying out duties such as Court Officer, Segregation Unit Officer and/or Personal Officer.
  • Monitoring and recording prisoner behaviour, including consideration of self-harm and suicide risks.
  • Completing reports relating to prison security, accidents, injuries, prisoner discipline and use of force.
  • Conducting checks and searches in accordance with prison procedures.
  • Contributing to reports relating to prisoner complaints, parole applications and Release on Temporary Licence (ROTL).
  • Participating in sentence planning and IEP review meetings.
  • Working in accordance with prison Orders, Policies and Notices.
  • Supporting other operational areas of the prison as required.
Essential Requirements

To be considered for this opportunity, you must:

  • Be a trained Prison Officer.
  • Have completed Prison Officer Entry Level Training (POELT).
  • Have recent experience working as a Prison Officer within a prison/HMP environment.
  • Have experience working with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be confident explaining rules and boundaries and dealing appropriately with challenging behaviour.
  • Be able to work effectively with prisoners, colleagues, management and external agencies.
  • Be able to work effectively in a pressurised environment.
  • Demonstrate resilience, professionalism and integrity.

Please note:

This vacancy is specifically for trained Prison Officers with the required Prison Officer experience and training. We are unable to consider candidates whose experience is limited to Prisoner Custody Officer, Custody Officer, Detention Officer, Court Escort, Immigration Officer or similar roles.

Working Pattern

Successful candidates will be assigned to the 42 Line, operating on a 14-week rotating cycle.

Shifts include:
  • Early: 07:00-13:45
  • Late: 13:30-20:30
  • Main: 07:45-17:15, including a one-hour lunch break
  • 'A' shift: 07:45-19:15, including a one-hour lunch break

You will be required to work every second weekend and may be required to work bank holidays and nights as part of the rotating pattern. Shift swaps may be possible subject to approval.

  • Travel to and from Guernsey funded and arranged by the States of Guernsey Government, by ferry or plane.

  • Annual leave entitlement pro-rated for the duration of the contract.
