Based within the Public Health Environmental Protection Team (PHEP), the role of Environmental Warden (Pest Control) , is a key post for Midlothian Council Protective Services.
This role will suit you if you like to work in a busy environment and achieve results that have a real positive impact on people’s lives.
You will be required to specialise in the provision of the Pest Control Service including conducting assessment of pest infestations, development and delivery of treatments plans and providing advice to various stakeholders for a range of different pests that impact public health. The duties of the post will also require you to work with the wider Environmental Health teams to offer advice and assistance on pest control matters and will involve liaise with other Council Services.
You will be expected to hold or study towards a relevant qualification to ensure technical competence and personal development (e.g. Royal Society for Health Certificate in Pest Control or British Pest Control Diploma or VQ in Pest Control or Animal Welfare).
Whilst leading on Pest Control the role also encompasses a range of Environmental Warden duties as required to support the PHEP Team. These duties include the investigation and enforcement of Environmental Crime related matters (flytipping, abandoned vehicles and reported litter cases) and Dog Control, including, on occasion, the handling of stray dogs.
As day to day delivery of the role requires the postholder to usually work alone you should demonstrate the initiative and skills to organise and complete the workload with limited supervision.
KNOWLEDGE
Essential
Essential qualifications and knowledge will depend upon which role(s) the jobholder is undertaking. Jobholders will have qualifications and experience to meet the requirements of one or more of the following activities:
All roles
- Evidence of competency in literacy and numeracy skills, such as Standard Grade level 3 passes to include English and Mathematics, or equivalent.
Litter, tipping & dog fouling
- Working knowledge of legislation and procedures relating to local authority activities and obligations on litter, dog fouling, and fly tipping.
Post holders will be expected to hold or study towards a relevant qualification to ensure technical competence and personal development (e.g. Royal Society for Health Certificate in Pest Control or British Pest Control Diploma or VQ in Pest Control or Animal Welfare).
Knowledge of handling authorised traps and poisons for eradication of vermin and other pests.
Knowledge of approaching and controlling dogs which may be aggressive.
Desirable for all postholders
Experience in a role enforcing regulations and legislation.
Experience of relating to a wide range of individuals and interest groups through employment or voluntary work.

Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £32,554.06 per annum.
