Position Overview

The Heavy Civil Equipment Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining heavy machinery and equipment used in construction, earthwork, and infrastructure projects. The operator will work on a variety of job sites, including roads, highways, utilities, and large-scale civil construction projects. This position requires knowledge of heavy equipment operations, safety procedures, and the ability to work collaboratively with a team of engineers, laborers, and project managers to ensure timely project completion.

Key Responsibilities

Operate Heavy Equipment:
Safely and efficiently operate a variety of heavy equipment, including but not limited to excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, graders, scrapers, skid steers, and trenches.

Site Preparation and Material Handling:
Perform tasks such as grading, leveling, digging, back filling, and hauling materials to prepare construction sites for subsequent phases of work.

Site Maintenance and Safety:
Conduct pre-operational inspections of equipment to ensure proper functioning and maintain a clean, safe work environment. Report any equipment issues or malfunctions to the maintenance team.

Project Assistance:
Assist with earthmoving operations, grading, trenching, and other tasks required to support the construction process.

Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with project managers, foremen, and other team members to ensure the work is completed according to project specifications and safety standards.

Site Documentation:
Maintain logs of equipment use, inspections, and maintenance activities, as well as job site conditions and progress.

Adhere to Safety Standards:
Follow all safety protocols and OSHA guidelines to minimize risk of accidents and ensure a safe work environment. Participate in safety meetings and training sessions.

Quality Control:
Ensure that the work meets company and industry standards for quality and efficiency. Report any discrepancies or concerns to supervisors.

Assist with Equipment Maintenance:
Perform basic maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, greasing, and checking fluid levels. Coordinate with the maintenance team for more advanced repairs.

Qualifications Education / Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience operating heavy equipment on construction or civil projects.
  • Certification in heavy equipment operation is preferred (e.g., OSHA, NCCER, etc.).
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of heavy machinery and civil construction processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and site plans.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry materials, as well as bend, stoop, and climb as needed.
  • Comfort with working outdoors in all weather conditions and on varied terrain.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating machinery.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass a background check, drug test, and physical exam.
Working Conditions
  • Work will be performed outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
  • The job may require travel to different job sites, and extended hours or weekend work may be required to meet project deadlines.
  • This position may involve working in high-traffic or high-risk construction environments, so strict adherence to safety regulations is mandatory.
