Position: How-To Geek - Freelance Tech Writer (Hobbies & DIY)

This position will operate on a remote, freelance basis.

We’re looking for Freelance Tech Writers to contribute feature content to our Hobbies & DIY category at How-to Geek!

This role is ideal for writers who enjoy breaking down hands‑on projects, exploring niche tech interests, and writing for readers who love to tinker, experiment, and optimize their setups. You’ll work closely with editors to produce clear, engaging articles that perform well and resonate with enthusiast audiences.

About Us

How-to Geek is a leading technology publication that helps readers understand, use, and enjoy technology. While we’re best known for practical how-to content, our Hobbies & DIY coverage focuses on the enthusiast side of tech — the projects, tools, and experiments people do because they want to, not because they have to.

Examples of topics include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Raspberry Pi and single-board computer projects
  • Home lab setups, upgrades, and experiments
  • USB-C devices, hubs, cables, and accessories
  • DIY tech projects and maker-style builds
  • Tool and hardware content that evokes brand loyalty
  • Enthusiast tech explained in a practical, accessible way
Responsibilities
  • Write original, well-researched feature articles for the Hobbies & DIY category
  • Pitch story ideas that appeal to tech enthusiasts and hobbyists
  • Clearly explain technical concepts to a broad audience
  • Meet deadlines and maintain consistent output
What We’re Looking For
  • Proven experience writing about technology (published samples required)
  • Interest or hands‑on familiarity with hobbyist or DIY tech topics
  • Strong ability to explain complex ideas clearly and engagingly
  • Comfortable writing on a regular cadence
  • Open to editorial guidance and headline optimization
Application Requirements
  • CV
  • Cover Letter
    • In your cover letter, please address the following questions:
      • Why do you want to write for How-to Geek?
      • What makes you the right fit for this role? (You can touch upon previous experience and your passion for DIY tech)
  • Screening Questions
  • Links to previously published work

We will get back to you as soon as possible if we think you’d make a solid addition to the team!
