Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) in Dallas, TX, part of Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH), the largest not‑for‑profit healthcare provider in the state of Texas, is seeking a collaborative, transformational, and visionary leader with a strong clinical and academic foundation as the next Chief of Surgery.

Position Overview

The BUMC Chief of Surgery will develop a vision for the Department of Surgery through the advancement of clinical programs, quality improvement, education, and research. The successful candidate will guide the transformation of care delivery in all areas of surgery, enhance integration of care between departments, and promote exemplary outcome performance in nationally recognized domains with the perpetual goal of Zero Harm.

The physician will serve as a mentor to peers and learners, forge alliances across the organization, and maintain a desire for continual process improvement.

  • Translate organizational strategy into a departmental vision and create nationally ranked programs.
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for the department’s clinical, academic, research, and administrative missions.
  • Form strong collaborative partnerships with administrative, medical, and nursing departments to promote a culture prioritizing clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and safety.
  • Oversee accreditation and regulatory management activities.
  • Represent BUMC on national committees and editorial boards as appropriate.
  • Promote a department dedicated to expanding inherent and acquired diversity.
  • Communicate performance, service standards, and expectations to staff and hold staff accountable through monitoring, development plans, and mentoring.
  • Establish a supportive physician and employee environment that encourages mutual respect, courtesy, and compassion.
  • Serve as a physician champion and leader for the highest quality healthcare and clinical performance excellence.
  • Oversee quality improvement projects and committees to foster a culture of Zero Harm and continuous improvement.
  • Support clinical and translational research that advances the clinical and educational objectives of BSWH.
  • Participate in development activities for extramural funding of research and endowment.
  • Support surgery residency and fellowship training programs and be personally involved with medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional, and courteous manner.
Candidate Qualifications
  • Have or be able to obtain an unrestricted Texas medical license.
  • Certified by the appropriate certifying board in a surgical field and have at least five years of academic practice and leadership experience.
  • Qualified for faculty appointment at the rank of professor or associate professor.
  • National recognition as a clinical leader, clinician‑scientist, and/or educator.
  • Experience in operational and financial management and leadership in a hospital, academic healthcare center, or academic group practice environment. Additional training in management or administration is preferred. Experience in medical staff functions is essential.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills to manage a complex integrated health system.
  • Ability to define and execute a vision; visionary who sees potential and opportunity.
  • Experience facilitating and coordinating physician alignment activities, building relationships with community and academic physicians.
  • Knowledge of and experience developing quality infrastructure, including decision tools, clinical protocols, guidelines, care management programs, and outcome measurement assessments.
  • Record of success in mentoring and developing faculty and supporting them in academic, teaching, and clinical endeavors.
  • Charismatic leader who demonstrates effective interpersonal and persuasive skills; an effective communicator with an emphasis on listening.
  • Ability to foster a sense of community among a diverse population of surgeons.
  • Approachable, personable, and optimistic demeanor with high visibility throughout the organization.
