Job Description & How to Apply Below

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is seeking an accomplished physician-investigator to serve as Division Chief of Hematology & Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine. This position represents a major leadership appointment in the Department and reports directly to the Chair of Internal Medicine. At the same time, the Division is a core component of UT Southwestern’s broader cancer enterprise and maintains a close, highly integrated relationship with the Harold

C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC). It provides the multidisciplinary framework and infrastructure that brings together medical oncology and hematology with surgical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, basic and translational sciences, clinical research, and disease-focused programs. While the Division and the SCCC are distinct organizational entities, their missions and activities are deeply interconnected, with much of the Division’s cancer clinical and research activity occurring within SCCC programs and infrastructure.

This matrixed structure requires a close partnership between the Division Chief , the Chair of Internal Medicine, and SCCC leadership to align faculty recruitment, clinical program development, research priorities, clinical trials, and strategic investments.

UT Southwestern is one of the nation’s leading medical research, education and clinical institutions. More than 3,400 full-time and 470 part-time faculty train nearly 4,000 medical, graduate and allied health students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows each year. Their portfolio includes ongoing research support from federal, foundation, state, and private sources of more than $816 million annually. The Department of Internal Medicine, comprised of 957 faculty, is organized into 15 divisions focused on excellence in education, research, and patient care.

The Division Chief serves as both the leader of Hematology & Oncology within Internal Medicine and as a key institutional leader in shaping the strategy and continued growth of the broader cancer enterprise. The Division is home to 93 faculty with primary appointments and 28 clinical fellows, who provide inpatient care on the hematology and oncology teaching services. Additionally, the Division brings in more than $25M in annual research expenditures, including approximately $5M in federal research funding.

Its broad portfolio includes basic, translation, and patient oriented research across hematology and oncology, with additional research support from state, private, philanthropic, and institutional sources.

Candidates must have leadership and management experience as an academic oncologist and scholarly achievements in research, clinical care, and/or medical education. Candidates are expected to perform clinical work and contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, residents, and fellows. Key responsibilities of the Chief include; recruiting, mentoring and developing the careers of faculty, and expanding the research capacity of the Division.

Applicants must be board certified in medical oncology, hematology, or both and be eligible for Texas medical licensure. Additionally, they must have a minimum of 10 years of strong faculty academic experience. The chief will lead the Division’s clinical, educational, and research programs; expand clinical and research initiative; and strengthen external funding. This role offers the opportunity to advance patient care, education, and cancer research while building programs and supporting growth across a major academic medical center.

UT Southwestern Medical Center is committed to an educational and working environment that provides equal opportunity to all members of the University community.
