Position Overview

The Geospatial Information Sciences (GIS) faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) invites applicants for five GIS graduate assistantships in its Ph.D. program, starting Fall 2026.

Each GIS graduate assistantship package includes up to 5 years of tuition waiver, a monthly stipend for 9 months, plus 3 optional summer months if in‑residence at UTD during the summer, and health insurance. Continuing graduate assistantships are subject to satisfactory progress towards degree completion and performance of assistantship assignments.

Program Description

UTD is a STEM‑emphasis R1 university. UTD GIS is a unique multidisciplinary program in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences (EPPS) that offers flexibility to enable faculty and students to participate across disciplinary boundaries and promote interdisciplinary research and education. Our GIS education and research center focuses on spatial computation across remote sensing, statistical analytics, geographical modeling, and geospatial AI predictions of environmental and social processes.

Besides GIS, the School of EPPS houses criminology, economics, political science, sociology, public policy, public & non‑profit management, sustainability, cybersecurity, and social data analytics and research. Ph.D. students may choose any subject area of interest to develop and apply GIS methods in their research and take courses across social sciences, geosciences, computer science, management information systems, electrical engineering, and physics.

Location

& Opportunities

UTD sits in the heart of north‑central Texas, which has a vibrant economy supported by 21 Fortune 500 companies located across the DFW Metroplex. The DFW metro is the third fastest‑growing metro and the fourth largest US metro by population, and outpaces Silicon Valley in STEM job creation. The Texas Constitution forbids personal income taxes.

Application Information

GIS Ph.D. admission and application information is available allas.edu/fact-sheets/epps/... where all applications must be submitted online via the "Apply Now" button. We are unable to take action on admissions until we receive a formal completed application, including transcripts, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. A GRE waiver is given to applicants with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The Final date to receive applications is December 15, 2025.

Ph.D. applicants should pay particular attention to the "personal statement" for their background, education, research experiences and interest, and academic objectives specifically relating to a Ph.D. in Geospatial Information Sciences.
