Position Description (What you will do)
The Hockaday School is seeking an experienced and innovative Middle School mathematics teacher beginning in the school year. The Hockaday School’s mathematics department uses an integrated curriculum, which, rather than teaching the usual sequence of algebra/geometry/algebra II in isolation, combines algebra and geometry with a problem‑solving approach to mathematics. The mathematics program at The Hockaday School emphasizes analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
We seek a candidate whose approach to instruction emphasizes conceptual thinking, provides varying techniques to accommodate a variety of learning styles, effectively incorporates technology, and provides a student‑centered learning environment that encourages active, participatory learning. The candidate will establish a learning atmosphere where students are encouraged to take risks while building competence in mathematics.
- Teach five sections of integrated mathematics per six‑day rotation in Middle School. Each section meets for 80 minutes per rotation. Some class sections will be enriched integrated math with an emphasis on critical thinking, problem‑solving, and the application of mathematical concepts to real‑world situations
- Serve as an advisor to a group of Middle School students
- Serve as a Middle School club sponsor
- Attend class field trips, including overnight travel
- Design units and assessments using backward design principles and the Building Thinking Classrooms framework to promote deep conceptual understanding, student thinking, and problem‑solving
- Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
- Effectively use technology in a way that expands class time and engages the class in the global community
- Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents
- Serve as an example to colleagues in manners of classroom management, teaching methods, and school procedures
- Other duties as assigned
- Advanced degree in mathematics, education or related field is preferred
- Teaching experience in mathematics in a Middle School setting with teaching Algebra I and Geometry
- Passion for working with Middle School students and an understanding of the developmental stages of Middle School students
- Experience and interest in developing innovative uses of technology in the classroom as well as comfort with its administrative use
- Experience developing curriculum strongly preferred
- Are eager to grow professionally, reflect on your practice, and engage with new research in math education
- Commitment to being a supportive, respectful, and energetic colleague and mentor
- Must have the ability to work in a school environment through satisfactory completion of all legally required and School‑required background and screening checks and verifications, including criminal and sex offender background checks.
