Make a profound impact volunteering 1 hour a week with Heart House’s Reading Homeroom program! As a tutor, you'll work 1‑1 with a K‑5 student at Lee A McShan Jr. Elementary School or Jill Stone Elementary School, guiding kids through the basics of phonics, writing, and reading comprehension with a side of social‑emotional learning. Many of these students are refugee and immigrant English Language Learners and Emergent Bilinguals eager to gain confidence and thrive in their environment.
You don’t need prior teaching experience; our team provides the curriculum, supplies, and hands‑on coaching you need to succeed. Just one hour of your time a week can help build a child’s self‑worth, foster their love for learning, and open doors to a brighter future. This program is under the direction of Heart House, a nonprofit serving Vickery Meadow for 25 years in the out‑of‑school‑time space.
Join us in achieving our goal of literacy and justice for all!
Days of Operation: Monday‑Thursday, September to May, excluding school holidays and testing dates
Hours of Operation: Tutoring time slots are determined by school administration. We are thrilled to be serving TWO schools this year!
PLEASE NOTE:
THIS IS A ONCE A WEEK, HOUR LONG COMMITMENT TO A STUDENT FOR THE DURATION OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. We will serve up to 150 specially selected children through reading intervention and social emotional learning guidance.
Requirements: This role requires a Dallas ISD volunteer background check prior to serving on any campus. Instructions will be provided.
