OverviewThe Director of Operations is responsible for owning, executing, and interpreting policies to ensure the successful operation of the business. This strategic leadership role sets the tone and standard for core values and best practices while driving business unit success towards goals and objectives. The Director maintains alignment with company objectives and standardizes practices across the department and company.
Critical RequirementsThis position requires professionals with civil and/or structural engineering or architectural backgrounds who have experience in Restoration and Repair Engineering, Forensic Engineering, and/or Building Enclosure. This is a client-facing consulting role, not a behind-the-desk position.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership
- Identify and implement personal development opportunities for team members (technical, project management, and personal growth)
- Lead, train, and mentor team members by acting as PM on select projects while meeting individual utilization expectations
- Facilitate monthly 1:1 meetings with each direct report using standardized tools; observe 2nd-level reports during initial sessions
- Oversee Business Operations Specialist to ensure contracts are managed, bi-weekly internal meetings are held, and periodic client outreach occurs
- Participate in company-wide initiatives as required
- Coordinate and complete projects ranging from quick turnaround assignments to highly complex, longer-cycle initiatives
- Lead/co‑lead resource scheduling to achieve individual and team utilization targets as well as revenue goals
- Review Consultant and Specialist level deliverables for content, consistency, and compliance while ensuring reporting standards and delivery timelines
- Evaluate '2-Week Lookahead' schedules to ensure efficient team deployment; partner with other leaders to fill scheduling gaps
- Provide technical assistance and staffing availability input on proposals to the Market Development team
- Deliver periodic progress reports and other metrics as needed
- Create draft and submit final invoices consistent with accounting timelines
- Review monthly accounts receivable and assist A/R team in client outreach for payment
- Provide high‑touch engagement with clients on complex projects requiring closer relationships
- Foster relationships with new and existing clients for tactical and strategic purposes
- Anticipate and communicate changes regarding clients, local market, or industry trends
- Develop plans to optimize opportunities and mitigate challenges
- Generate revenue projections leveraging resources, schedules, and backlog data
- Provide biweekly status updates during Ops-huddle meetings
- Own department-specific data/updates for Monthly Town Hall meetings
- Facilitate monthly progress tracking meetings to review goals and current staffing levels
- Co‑lead annual planning cycle including revenue and margin targets, service line/market expansion, resource/training needs, and team development
- Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering/Architecture-related discipline
- Minimum 8 years of experience in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or Project Management in design, construction, or forensics
- Must have experience in Restoration and Repair Engineering, Forensic Engineering, and/or Building Enclosure
- Civil and/or structural engineering or architectural background required (no mechanical, electrical, chemical, or geotechnical engineering)
- 2 years of business unit leadership and management responsibility, including managing staff, group revenue responsibilities, growth strategy, hiring/firing, and business development
- Understanding of the design and construction process from conception to completion
- Practical understanding of building structures
- Ability to read and interpret drawings
- PE or AIA license
- Technically competent with ability to effectively communicate and build rapport with team, clients, co‑workers, and subcontractors
