Position: Tax Manager, Credits & Incentives

Tax Manager, Credits & Incentives – BDO USA

BDO USA is seeking a Tax Manager to advise clients on credit and incentive opportunities, recommend alternative courses of action, and help navigate state and local tax statutes. The role includes marketing, networking, and business development, and requires close collaboration with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers.

Job Responsibilities
  • Identify complex credit and incentive situations, outline issues, and determine appropriate research sources.
  • Analyze researched facts and produce detailed reports or opportunity matrices.
  • Develop relationships with state Department of Tax/Revenue and Economic Development personnel.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of income tax returns to find significant statutory credit opportunities.
  • Evaluate clients’ compliance processes and provide customized, automated solutions for annual credit reporting.
  • Draft memoranda and other documentation on various credit and incentive issues.
  • Review client operations to identify potential credits in different jurisdictions.
  • Apply all applicable state tax consulting sub‑specialties and collaborate with other STS professionals as needed.
  • Ensure engagement letters are adopted before work begins and manage engagements.
  • Assist in developing consultative credit and incentive strategies.
  • Manage client expectations throughout engagements.
  • Draft responses to notices from state taxing authorities and represent clients before tax authorities on incentive issues.
  • Support clients during tax examinations.
  • Utilize credit and incentive research databases and related software.
  • Provide technical client service to multi‑state clients on credit matters.
  • Negotiate credit and incentive matters and draft technical memoranda.
  • Review studies to identify alternative actions and suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Supervise the day‑to‑day workload of Senior Associates and Associates on engagements, review work product, and provide training on tax software.
  • Evaluate staff performance, develop goals, deliver feedback, and complete performance evaluations.
  • Serve as a career advisor for associates and interns as appropriate.
Qualifications, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field (required).
  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, or Juris Doctorate (preferred).
  • Five (5) or more years of state and local/multistate tax experience (required); experience in credits and incentives strongly preferred.
  • Experience supervising tax professionals on projects or engagements (required).
  • Experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions (preferred).
  • CPA or other relevant certification (required).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word (preferred).
  • Exposure to standard tax applications and research tools (preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior analytical and research skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Capability to manage and delegate to a team of tax professionals.
  • Ability to build and maintain client relationships and foster a team environment.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary engagement contact.
  • Advanced knowledge of tax standards and credit/incentive filing processes.
  • Advanced understanding of cause/effect for taxable conditions and opportunities.
Compensation
  • National Range: $79,800 – $168,000
  • Maryland Range: $79,800 – $168,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $79,800 – $168,000
  • Washington DC Range: $79,800 – $168,000
