Position PurposeThe Single Function Paramedic (SF-PM) is a non‑firefighter position that provides advanced life‑support care and transport of patients in the Dallas Fire‑Rescue EMS system. The SF-PM may deliver expanded role emergency medical services such as emergency incident rehabilitation, mobile integrated healthcare, and injury reduction/prevention programs. The SF‑PM must perform conscientiously, proficiently and as part of a two‑person team at all assignments and duties, and is responsible for respectful treatment of citizens.
EssentialFunctions
- Provides ALS care and transport of patients in the Dallas Fire‑Rescue EMS system.
- May deliver expanded role emergency medical services such as emergency incident rehabilitation, mobile integrated healthcare, and injury reduction/prevention programs.
- Performs conscientiously, proficiently and as a part of a two‑person team at any and all assignments and duties.
- Is responsible for recognizing the importance placed on activities by the public and for tactful and respectful treatment of citizens.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
- Be at least 18 years of age on the date the civil service exam is given.
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- For any completed military service, possess a designation of honorable or uncharacterized discharge as indicated on separation documents provided by the military.
- Have demonstrated safe driving habits and be qualified to drive a motor vehicle in Texas.
- Pass a physical ability test administered by Dallas Fire‑Rescue Department.
- Meet one of the following qualifications:
- Possess a current Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification or a National Registry Paramedic Certification.
- Have successfully completed an approved Dallas Fire‑Rescue Department‑sponsored educational program or partnership within five years of applying to the Dallas Fire‑Rescue Department; possess a current Texas Department of State Health Services EMT‑Basic Certification or a National Registry EMT‑Basic Certification; and at least one of the following:
- Have at least 45 semester hours of college credit with a C average or better from an accredited college or university.
- Have received a passing score on the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) within the last 12 months.
- Military discharge status must be honorable or uncharacterized (if applicable).
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- No felony convictions.
- No class A misdemeanor convictions within the last five years.
- No class B misdemeanor convictions within the last two years.
- No more than four class C misdemeanor convictions within the last ten years.
- Must not be under criminal investigation during the application process.
- Must not be currently on probation for DWI or other traffic offenses.
- Must not have any outstanding traffic warrants or pending citations.
- Must not have committed or have been convicted of driving with a suspended license within the last 12 months.
- Must not be on probation for any crime at the time of application.
- Must pass physical abilities test to be administered by the Dallas Fire‑Rescue Department.
- Must possess the physical/medical health to adequately perform the duties of a Single Function Paramedic.

- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees, all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees, and the general public.
- Ability to competently render both emergency pre‑hospital care and care in connection with inter‑facility transportation.
- Ability to maintain compliance with all safety requirements and applicable protocols.
- Ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and bystanders.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain all equipment and tools relevant to position.
- Ability to proficiently use maps and routing software to minimize call response time.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with other healthcare professionals.
- Ability to write clearly and efficiently and accurately document patient care and information.
- Ability to perform responsibly and act as team leader during management of a scene.
