JOB SUMMARY

The Respiratory Care teams are integral to daily clinical care. They collaborate with clinical caregivers, patients, and families to maintain ideal lung health. The Respiratory Therapist performs with a high degree of competency in all clinical aspects of respiratory care for adults, geriatrics, and neonates, including application and monitoring of medical gases, environmental control, mechanical ventilatory support, artificial airway care, bronchopulmonary hygiene, pharmacologic agents related to respiratory care procedures, and rehabilitation related to cardiopulmonary function.

Utilizes scientific principles for identification, prevention, remediation, research, and rehabilitation of acute or chronic cardiopulmonary dysfunction.

Experience and Education

Required

  • Education
    :
    Associate's Degree — Graduate of an accredited program in respiratory care
  • Experience
    :
    Six months in Pulmonary Function Lab (A.A.S.)
  • Licenses and Certifications
    :
    Texas Medical Board License by the TMB upon hire;
    Registered by the NBRC upon hire; BLS certification (AHA) upon hire; RPFT or CPFT within 180 days; specialty areas may require additional certification/license as dictated by unit or standard of care

    Bachelor's Degree — Graduate of an accredited program in respiratory care
Job Duties
  • Performs PFT and CPX testing according to departmental policies and procedures
  • Arterial blood gas testing
  • Assess patient effort/cooperation across all PFT modes
  • Maintain knowledge of PFT-related pharmacology, including methacholine challenge
  • Assemble, troubleshoot, and perform daily QA on PFT devices; read and document QA reports
  • Communicate with physicians regarding ordered tests, interpretation of PFT data, and related findings; report critical values
  • Foster teamwork, fair collaboration, and open two-way communication
  • Demonstrate safe arterial puncture skills following department procedures for arterial blood gases
  • Generate patient charges accurately; maintain PFT records and backup data per policy
  • Report patient care and equipment issues to the clinical manager; seek assistance when appropriate
  • Assist in writing procedures and delivering in-services as needed
  • Support inventory control and equipment repair responsibilities
  • Monitor personal strengths/weaknesses and pursue opportunities to improve
  • Perform other duties as assigned
