FT Perfusion ServicesVariable work schedule. Ability to work on call is required.
EducationBachelor’s degree from an accredited perfusion program is required.
Certification / LicenseMust hold Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) and Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) from the Texas Medical Board at the time of hire or transfer.
Experience1–2 years of intermediate level perfusion experience preferred. Candidates should have a desire to teach, train cardiology fellows, and share perfusion knowledge with fellows, team members, and students during clinical rotations.
Job SummaryThe Perfusionist provides patient care by operating extracorporeal circulation equipment in any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. The Perfusionist selects appropriate equipment and techniques for support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system, and monitors, analyzes, and treats physiologic conditions under medical orders and physician supervision.

The Role
- Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps the surgeon and other personnel fully informed.
- Ensures sterility and integrity of disposable equipment packaging and correctly sets up and breaks down both disposable and non‑disposable, sterile and non‑sterile equipment.
- Monitors cell saver and operates the heart‑lung machine, blood gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac assist devices.
- Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in a manner consistent with industry best practices and institutional policies.
- Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs, and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit to achieve safe and effective procedures.
- Records relevant perfusion information during surgery, analyzes, and maintains records post‑surgery.
- Performs quality control and preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment, and maintains equipment and supply inventory.
- Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and biology.
- Knowledge of various cardiac diseases, defects, and congenital anomalies.
- Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adults, pediatrics, and infants.
- Knowledge of blood flow paths, pressures, and gas exchange in adult, pediatric, and infant patients.
- Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition, and blood product use in extracorporeal circuits.
- Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow orders, directions, and implement written perfusion protocols.
- Ability to communicate clearly during operation of extracorporeal support devices and patient care.
- Ability to learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards and protocols relevant to operating room procedures and departmental policies.
- Ability to cooperate flexibly in a team approach to patient care.
- Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.
