Job SummaryThe Coding Audit Educator audits inpatient and/or outpatient hospital records for coding and documentation accuracy in accordance with official coding guidelines and regulatory requirements. This position serves as the coding subject‑matter expert and provides educational feedback to staff and teams.

- Three to five years of acute hospital‑based coding experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Licenses and certifications: RHIA (REGD Health Information Administrator), RHIT (REGD Health Information Technologist), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCDS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist)
- Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) (non‑AAPC Apprentice)
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or closely related field
- Experience working remotely
- AHIMA‑Approved I10 Trainer Certification
- Identify educational opportunities by auditing inpatient and/or outpatient accounts in compliance with official coding guidelines and conventions
- Prepare and provide educational feedback to individuals and, if relevant, to the entire Coding and/or CDI teams
- Research and prepare educational tutorials and submit to AHIMA for CEU approval
- Accurately audit records for principal diagnosis, DRG, reason for visit, procedures, and all reportable secondary diagnoses to reflect the highest level of acuity
- Accurately audit abstracting for required data elements (discharge disposition, discharge destination, procedure dates, physicians, etc.)
- Identify when a physician query is appropriate for coding clarification
- Recognize documentation gaps or incompleteness and recommend appropriate action
- Support the quality standards set by UTSW
- Mentor/train on designated service lines as requested to ensure quality
- Maintain expert-level knowledge of coding related guidelines and practices
- Other duties as assigned
