Primary Purpose

Coordinates patient care, clerical and administrative needs by acting as the primary contact for the unit, while assisting and responding to information requests from doctors, nurses, patients, patient families and others to effectively service unit staff and customers by providing a permanent information resource within the unit. Unit Technicians perform phlebotomy skills, drawing labs and preparing these for testing.

Minimum Specifications – Education
  • Must have completed or hold one of the following:
    Formal nurse aide course
    , Current certified nurse aide registry
    , Medical assistant course
    , Current medical assistant certificate
    , Patient care technician course
    , Current patient care technician certificate
    , Currently enrolled in an accredited school of professional nursing and have documentation of basic fundamentals of nursing
    , Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
    , or Parkland's job specific training program
Experience
  • One (1) year of experience in a healthcare setting.
Equivalent

Education and/or Experience
  • Successful completion of Parkland's job specific training program will be considered equivalent to one (1) year experience.
  • One year acute care hospital experience in lieu of educational requirements.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
  • Must have a current Heartsaver CPR course completion card within 90 days of hire and/or placement in job from either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Responsibilities
  • Act as a Patient Care Assistant and a Health Unit Coordinator.
  • Perform phlebotomy tasks and conduct lab draws as needed for the assigned unit.
  • Coordinate patient care and clerical needs, acting as primary contact for the unit and responding to all information requests.
  • Provide specified patient care activities under RN direction, including basic hygiene care, injections, venipunctures, sterile and unsterile treatments, vital signs and range‑of‑motion exercises.
  • Assist with patient mobility, feeding, transportation of meal trays, and other supportive care.
  • Serve as patient advocate, responding to needs and requests while maintaining confidentiality and honoring patient rights.
  • Prepare and process patient files, enter, sort, update records, and create reports summarizing key information.
  • Monitor patient status and notify nurses of changes in condition.
  • Admit, transfer and discharge patients, manage charts, check rooms and process valuables.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records, including vital signs, ambulation, feeding outcomes and quality‑control checks.
  • Maintain work environment and patient care areas per infection prevention and environment of care guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines affecting the unit; develop internal controls to promote adherence to applicable laws and accreditation requirements.
  • Order, pick‑up and deliver medical supplies, laboratory requisitions, patient specimens and other items; ensure supplies are stocked and rotated appropriately.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by manager or designee.
