Job Summary

Works under the direct supervision of the Director/Managing Attorney for Healthcare Transactions to handle a wide variety of health law and regulatory issues impacting a large, academic medical center.

Experience and Education Required
  • Education
    J.D. degree from ABA‑accredited law school
  • Experience
    3 years professional legal experience in transactional/regulatory health care practice
  • Licenses and Certifications
    License to practice law in the State of Texas upon hire
Preferred
  • Experience
    Professional legal experience in an academic medical center, hospital system, or similar healthcare setting or in a law firm representing healthcare clients
Job Duties
  • Advise on healthcare law and regulatory issues arising within clinical practices, health system facilities, and affiliations with external partners, including but not limited to STARK and anti‑kickback, EMTALA, HIPAA and other privacy laws, billing and physician and hospital reimbursement compliance, accountable care organizations, acquisitions, government funding, managed care contracting, education agreements, telemedicine, and antitrust.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the University’s healthcare provider practices (excluding medical malpractice /risk management) and hospital and clinical facilities meet regulatory requirements.
  • Draft and review legal documents for risk mitigation and legal and regulatory compliance including, but not limited to contracts, leases, affiliation agreements, professional services agreements, memoranda, and litigation‑related materials.
  • Advise on new and existing healthcare regulatory policy initiatives; draft, review and revise institutional, hospital and departmental policies and procedures; serve on and support hospital and ambulatory policy committees; develop and provide training on a broad range of healthcare law issues.
  • Support and serve on various healthcare‑related institutional, hospital and clinical boards and committees.
  • Provide litigation defense support in limited areas of medical and allied health clinical practices; interact with UT System Office of General Counsel, the Texas Office of the Attorney General, and private counsel in the defense of claims.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
