Methodist Charlton Medical Center PGYPharmacy Residency Program; Program

This 52-week residency experience at Methodist Charlton Medical Center is designed to provide residents with experiences in a variety of clinical areas. Our goal is to develop clinical pharmacists responsible for patient care across multiple disease states, capable of critical thinking, eligible for board certification, and prepared for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training if desired.

Resident responsibilities include:

• Establishing collaborative working relationships with healthcare providers on multidisciplinary rounding teams.
• Identifying patient-specific drug therapy problems to resolve or prevent.
• Creating comprehensive care plans and providing education to the healthcare team.
• Participating in hospital committees such as P&T and Quality & Safety.
• Engaging in pharmacy consult services, including TPN, antibiotic dosing, pharmacokinetics, and warfarin dosing.
• Attending medical emergencies like code blue, stroke, and rapid sequence intubations.
• Developing and implementing policies, protocols, and order sets.
• Gaining in-depth knowledge of pharmacy operations and medication delivery processes.
• Educating nursing staff and family medicine residents as needed.

Salary: $52,038 +/- market increase

Program Requirements:

• Major research project presented at the ASHP mid-year clinical meeting and regional residency conference.
• Manuscript submission for publication to RPD and research mentor.
• One medication utilization evaluation.
• Two journal clubs.
• Two case presentations.
• One drug class review or monograph.
• Heart Health and Diabetes Workshop presentation to community members.
• CE seminar for pharmacists.
• Update or create a treatment guideline or protocol.
• One formal drug information response.
• Obtain a preceptor license from the Texas State Board of Pharmacy and serve as primary preceptor for one student.
• Complete a teaching certificate through the University of North Texas Health Science Center College of Pharmacy.

Rotation Requirements:

• Required 4-week rotations include Orientation, Internal Medicine I, Ambulatory Care, Critical Care I, Emergency Medicine I, Infectious Disease I, Family Medicine, Management, and Research (December data collection).
• Longitudinal rotations include staffing every third weekend with holiday coverage, research/major project, Code Blue response, and pharmacy administration.
• Elective 4-week rotations include ICU II or IM II (required for one elective), Infectious Disease II, NICU, Oncology, Transitions of Care, pulmonology, cardiology, Emergency Medicine II & III, night shifts, and off-site rotations such as Oncology and Transplant.
• Elective longitudinal rotations include ambulatory care (spring) and infectious disease.
