This position supports clinical pharmacy services in the Emergency Department (ED), providing real-time pharmacotherapy expertise in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The ED specialist collaborates with emergency medicine providers to ensure safe and effective medication use, supports rapid response, codes, and contributes to departmental initiatives focused on ED care. Responsibilities include bedside support, medication reconciliation, therapeutic interventions, and precepting pharmacy learners in the ED setting.
Non-direct patient care activities may include cost savings initiatives, committee involvement, and participation in departmental projects and practice advancement efforts.

Both PGY1 and PGY2 from an ASHP-accredited residency program; PGY1 with 5 years of progressive clinical practice experience;
Bachelor s Degree of Science or Pharm
D from ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm
D) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy - Experience
: 5 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty with PGY1 from an ASHP-accredited residency program or 8 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty. Computer skills, data entry experience;
English (speaking, reading, writing). Good general health and stress coping ability. Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs.), reaching, bending, crouching, etc. - Licenses and Certifications
: (BLS) Basic Life Support certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Upon Hire; (TSBP) Registered Pharmacy Technician eligible for licensure by Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) Upon Hire and (TSBP) Registered Pharmacy Technician - Texas license with TSBP within 30 days of hire; (ACLS) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course accredited by AHA or ARC required for only inpatient positions prior to or within 6 months of employment.
- Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards. Develops/implements process to meet/comply with JCAHO and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinates staff training, competencies, certification and continued education specific to specialty. Assists clinical staff pharmacists with therapeutic monitoring, patient assessments, interpretation of lab values, TPN assessment and pharmacokinetic calculations. Identifies opportunities for process improvements, develops and implements policy and procedures for prompt, safe and efficient patient care.
- Actively promotes pharmacy. Coordinates and participates in multidisciplinary in-services/meetings, publishes articles (i.e. staff newsletter), individualized drug information, rounds, consults, etc. Maintains high visibility/availability through participation in in-services, meetings and daily activities. Participates in the education/experiential training of pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.
- Actively manage P&T initiatives through monitoring of documented interventions. Verifies data, develops measures and reports outcomes (Performance Improvement). Supports cost savings initiatives. Has active role in assessment and selection of cost-effective pharmaceuticals. Reviews formulary addition request and develops monographs for presentation. Manage the formulary system and procedures for acquisition of non-formulary product.
