Help coach adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their jobs in a cozy cafe setting! With the help of volunteers, the mission based staff with special needs perform all of the roles necessary to run a restaurant.

The mission of Hugs Cafeč, Inc. is to enhance the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through training and employment. Many call our cafe one of the happiest places on earth!

As a volunteer job coach, your role is to support, prompt and encourage the Hugs employees in their various roles at the café: greeters, sandwich line, servers, busing tables and at the register. A volunteer job coach will model the task and behavior that the employee is assigned. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and, if they are below 18, they need to have a parent or guardian volunteer with them.

The ideal volunteer can volunteer once a week at the same day and time for at least 4 weeks in a row (as consistency truly helps our employees thrive!).

• All regular job coaches in the cafe must complete a background check prior to volunteering with Hugs
• Volunteers should wear a Hugs T-shirt, durable pants in kitchen roles or knee length shorts, and closed-toe, non-slip comfortable shoes.
• Job coaches should not perform duties without an employee present
• Interaction‑1:1 task coach, prompting, encouraging, helping them in different ways depending on their needs (one employee may need one on one hand‑over‑hand prompting while another employee doesn’t have as many needs)
• The cafe is open 8 am – 3 pm Monday‑Saturday. The breakfast and lunch menu are served all day. The staff members you are coaching will have a 15‑minute or 30‑minute break depending on whether they work for over 5 hours. Please cover the position you are coaching or slide to another area to support per direction of the cafe manager.
• Volunteers are asked to put their phones away and not take pictures of employees without permission
• Please allow the employees to self‑correct by asking questions and giving gentle prompts
