Job SummaryThe PreOP/OR/PACU nurse provides quality patient care using the nursing process, the medical plan of care, and organizational policies. The nurse ensures safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in perioperative services for all patients.
Responsibilities- Prepare patients for surgery by conducting preoperative assessments, reviewing medical histories, and confirming surgical plans with the medical team.
- Ensure patients and families are well-informed by explaining procedures, post‑surgical care, and recovery expectations.
- Monitor and provide comprehensive care for patients in the Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), observing vital signs, managing pain, and addressing any complications that arise post‑surgery.
- Assist in the operating room (OR) as necessary, ensuring proper aseptic techniques and working collaboratively with the surgical team to maintain a sterile environment.
- Administer medications, fluids, and anesthesia as needed, in accordance with the medical plan of care.
- Document patient care activities thoroughly and accurately.
- Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure patient safety, effective communication, and continuity of care across all stages of the perioperative process.
- Respond promptly to any adverse events or emergency situations, adhering to ACLS and BLS protocols.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of ophthalmic surgical procedures and contribute to the continuous improvement of care practices in line with current medical guidelines.
- Follow organizational policies, including infection control, patient confidentiality, and workplace safety standards.
- Unrestricted RN license in the state (RN preferred).
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- 1‑3 years of previous experience in Pre‑OP/OR/PACU (preferred).
- Previous experience in an ambulatory surgical center preferred.
- Current BLS certification; ACLS preferred or required within 60 days of hire.
- Strong knowledge of ophthalmic surgical procedures and the management of surgical patients.
- Ambulatory surgery center specializing in ophthalmology and oculoplastics.
- Outpatient environment.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move frequently for prolonged periods.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, and position self to assist patients as needed.
- Ability to use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Visual acuity sufficient to assess patient condition and read medical charts.
- Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination required for handling instruments and administering care.
- Must respond quickly to auditory signals, including alarms and calls for help, and communicate verbally with patients and staff.
- Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
- PreOP/OR/PACU: 2 years (Preferred).
- Ambulatory surgical center: 1 year (Preferred).
- BLS (Required).
- ACLS (Preferred; must obtain within 60 days of hire).
- Registered Nurse with an unrestricted license in the state.
