White Rock Medical Center is a community-based hospital located near the historic White Rock Lake community, serving Dallas, Garland, Mesquite and surrounding areas. The Emergency Department Charge Nurse/Supervisor provides clinical leadership and operational oversight of the Emergency Department during assigned shifts. This role ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care delivery while managing daily operations, staff coordination, and regulatory compliance. As part of a 24/7 leadership team, the Charge Nurse serves as the administrative and clinical authority for the department during their shift.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Leadership- Provide direct oversight of all clinical activities in the Emergency Department during assigned shift
- Ensure appropriate patient triage, assessment, and treatment protocols are followed
- Assist with critical patients and complex clinical situations as needed
- Monitor patient flow and implement strategies to optimize throughput and reduce wait times
- Ensure proper handoff communication between shifts and with admitting units
- Manage daily staffing assignments based on patient acuity and volume
- Coordinate with nursing staff, physicians, ancillary services, and support departments
- Address patient and family concerns, complaints, and service recovery needs
- Ensure adequate supplies, equipment, and resources are available
- Manage bed placement and coordinate with admitting departments for patient transfers
- Supervise, mentor, and support ER nursing staff and support personnel during shift
- Conduct real-time performance feedback and coaching
- Address attendance, behavioral, or performance issues as they arise
- Facilitate communication between staff and leadership
- Participate in staff recruitment, onboarding, and competency validation
- Monitor and enforce compliance with regulatory standards (CIHQ, CMS, state regulations)
- Ensure adherence to infection control protocols and environmental safety standards
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and safety reporting
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and adverse events; complete required documentation
- Support culture of safety initiatives
- Participate in daily operational huddles and communicate shift priorities
- Document shift activities, incidents, and staffing challenges
- Support EMR optimization and proper documentation practices
- Contribute to departmental policies, procedures, and strategic planning
- Current Texas RN license in good standing
- Minimum 5 years of emergency nursing experience
- Minimum 2 years of charge nurse or supervisory experience in emergency setting
- BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certifications (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
- CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) certification required within 1 year of hire
- Strong knowledge of emergency nursing standards, EMTALA regulations, and CIHQ requirements
- Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Experience with EMR systems (facility currently implementing new system)
- Previous experience in multi-facility healthcare systems
- Experience with quality improvement methodologies
- Clinical expertise in emergency and trauma care across all age groups
- Strong communication skills with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams
- Ability to make sound decisions under pressure and manage multiple priorities
- Proficiency in conflict resolution and difficult conversations
- Commitment to fostering positive team culture and employee engagement
- Understanding of regulatory compliance and accreditation standards
- Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic healthcare environment
- Ability to work 12-hour shifts with extended periods of standing and walking
- Capability to lift, turn, and position patients (up to 50 lbs with assistance)
- Manual dexterity for clinical procedures and computer documentation
- Visual and auditory acuity to monitor patients and equipment
- Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations
- Fast-paced emergency department with varying patient volumes and acuity levels
- Exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and hazardous materials
- Potential exposure to combative or emotionally distressed patients
- 24/7 operation requiring shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays
- On-call expectations for staffing emergencies or critical incidents
