Sr Registered Nurse (RN) - Inpatient Oncology - PT Nights
Location:
Parkland: 14th FLR BLK 600
Using the Parkland nursing professional practice model, the RN coordinates patient care delivery for inpatient oncology patients. The RN assesses patients, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements individualized plans of care, and evaluates patient responses to ensure smooth transitions without preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions in accordance with the Texas Nursing Practice Act and the competencies of the staff.
MinimumSpecifications
- Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing school.
- Must have at least two years of nursing experience.
- Must possess a current, valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing, or a valid Compact RN license.
- Must have a current BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network.
- Must have an Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy certificate within six months of placement. (Current incumbents hired before May 1, 2022 must obtain the certificate by May 31, 2022.)
- Provides patient-centered care in accordance with Texas Nurse Practice Act and established protocols.
- Demonstrates ability to safely perform all responsibilities of a Registered Nurse II – Oncology Services.
- Has comprehensive knowledge of chemotherapy indications and side effects.
- Initiates and discontinues intravenous access; maintains central line devices.
- Works independently, exercising sound judgment and providing direction to non-nursing staff.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff; may use overhead paging system.
- Prepares and conducts in‑service educational programs; serves as a preceptor and Charge Nurse on rotation.
- Completes oncology orientation and maintains current licensure and certifications.
- Stays current with nursing practice developments and maintains Commission on Cancer certification or completes required continuing education credits.
- Advocates for patients, respecting rights, confidentiality, and cultural preferences.
- Maintains positive relationships with internal and external customers and employees.
- Serves as a resource, providing patient education and training to patients and families.
- Supports community outreach activities as assigned.
- Ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including EMTALA and other hospital policies.
- Develops and enforces internal controls promoting adherence to state/federal laws and accreditation standards.
- Performs patient assessments for admission, discharge, and ongoing cancer care, documenting accurately and timely.
- Provides education on cancer care, therapies, side effects, and prevention.
- Collaborates with wound, stoma, and ENT nurses for specialized care.
- Manages triage and navigates the health care system with patients and families.
- Seeks guidance from experienced staff when needed and may assist in directing non-nursing staff.
- Engages in information exchanges supporting Oncology Services goals.
- Identifies and implements process improvements to enhance patient and customer satisfaction.
- Prepares and conducts annual in-service educational programs for Oncology Services.
- Maintains Texas RN licensure and additional required certifications.
- Stays abreast of clinical trials relevant to patients and communicates with trial staff.
