As a Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), you will play an important role in implementing the goals and objectives of the nursing service and the facility through coordinating resident care management and staff direction and by providing direct nursing care to residents.

• Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations in all areas of nursing care. Clarify nursing policies and procedures for staff, residents, and families.
• Ensure resident plan of care is followed and proper documentation is performed.
• Assist staff in identifying resident care needs and problem areas. Develop work assignments and/or assist nursing supervisory staff in completing and performing such tasks.
• Orient staff to philosophy and objectives of nursing services. Direct nurses and nursing assistants in setting priorities of care.
• Conduct conferences with staff and residents as needed to identify and resolve staff and resident issues. Document all issues and actions taken. If issues are not resolved, refer to Director of Nursing for further action.
• Evaluate nursing care rendered through such means as resident visits, quality assurance programs, chart audits, team conferences, etc.
• Assist the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, and directing nursing personnel in fulfilling their responsibilities for nursing service.
• Provide professional leadership to nursing personnel; assist in identifying staffing needs. Source, hire, supervise, monitor, evaluate and provide direction to direct reports, as needed.
• Provide professional growth and development; participate in the orientation and training of new nursing unit employees; develop and communicate goals and objectives.
• Monitor and provide constructive feedback; conduct annual performance evaluation. Review work performance of nursing personnel on an ongoing basis.
• Train and evaluate proficiency of staff in new procedures and techniques and operation of equipment and instruments. Develop, train, and lead staff in an environment of customer service and safety.
• Assess and provide for educational needs of staff. Perform annual skills checklist for each nursing assistant and report results to Director of Nursing.
• Assist in preparing reports for Quality Assurance Team meetings. Participate in the development, maintenance and implementation of the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
• Make daily rounds of the nursing services department to ensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards and to observe and communicate with residents to determine if nursing needs are being met.
• Review nurses’ notes to ensure that they are complete, informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided and that they reflect the resident’s response to the care.
• Provide direct nursing care to residents as necessary.
• Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc. as necessary.
• Ensure that nursing service work areas, resident care rooms, and treatment areas are maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner.
• Identify issues relating to equipment and supplies. Identify issues that may cause a safety hazard. Report issues to maintenance and supervisor immediately.
