Job Summary

The Levi laboratory in the Division of Burn, Trauma, Acute and Critical Care Surgery, Department of Surgery, seeks a Research Scientist with an Osteosarcoma focus. The position requires a minimum commitment of two years and involves bench and animal work related to tendon, muscle, and bone injury/fibrosis and regeneration. Responsibilities include routine molecular bench work, animal handling and surgeries, downstream processing (histology, immunofluorescence, confocal imaging, flow cytometry), and single‑cell/bulk RNA sequencing as supervised by the PI.

Laboratory

Expectations
  • Routine molecular bench work combined with the use of animal models
  • Animal handling, injections, modified diet maintenance, surgeries, and sample collection
  • Downstream processing: histology, immunofluorescent staining, confocal imaging, flow cytometry, and cell culture
Preferred Experience
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, western blotting, RNA/DNA extraction, cloning, CRISPR/Cas9, next‑generation sequencing)
  • Experience with animal handling, breeding, genotyping, and surgery
  • Experience with single‑cell transcriptomics and tissue histology pipelines
  • Experience with flow cytometry and mass spectrometry
  • Strong written and oral communication, organizational skills, and data analysis using bioinformatics and statistical methods
Laboratory Duties
  • Animal breeding, genotyping, handling, and surgery
  • Execution of molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, western blotting, RNA/DNA extraction, cloning, CRISPR/Cas9, next‑generation sequencing)
  • Flow cytometry and mass spectrometry
  • Full histology pipeline from tissue harvest to confocal microscopy
  • Design and execution of experiments to uncover molecular mechanisms
  • Plan and develop standard operating protocols
  • Analyze research data and revise protocols as needed
  • Collaborate with industry, government, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Maintain a respectful, inclusive, clean, and functional laboratory environment
  • Prepare findings for publication and presentation at conferences
  • Participate in grant writing and fundraising efforts
  • Train and supervise junior laboratory personnel

Required Experience and Education
  • PhD with coursework in the relevant field, or Master's/Bachelor’s with additional experience as outlined below
  • Five years of research experience with a PhD and at least two years at Senior Research Associate level, or seven years with a Master’s and three years at Senior level, or nine years with a Bachelor’s and four years at Senior level
Job Duties
  • Plan, coordinate, and lead scientific or medical research projects; select key personnel and set objectives
  • Review and analyze research data; refine techniques as necessary
  • Prepare research manuscripts, reports, and abstracts; serve as co‑author
  • Design or adapt equipment for experiments to meet research goals
  • Supervise training of technicians and laboratory staff on protocols, safety, and equipment use
  • Supervise a team of lower‑grade employees undertaking technical work
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders on project progress
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
